Thought I would share a problem that has cropped up quite often this year.

I have fitted new consumer units ( probably too early) on domestic extentions with building work still ongoing. Towards the end of the job found that some of the MCBs , although switched on, were not passing any voltage.

Between my visits for 1st and 2nd fix the builder had been creating a load of brick and plaster dust ( you know what they're like !!) . Dust had penetrated the MCBs and coated the contacts, had to sling 'em. This has happened to the main switch too. I always thought the MCBs were sealed , obviously not. May be a good idea to stick a plastic bag over the CU till the dreaded builders have gone.

Know the problem - best to keep box as sealed as possible, always hated dirt in CU especially as I used to work in a 'Cleanroom' on high integrity products.

About 3 - 3half years ago..

moved a cu to opposite side of wall into utility room........

TT installation Split load 1 x 100ma RCD & 1 x 30ma RCD...

about 6 months after move.. got phone call

CU buzzing & Fizzing

builder has removed lathe & plaster ceiling!!!! :OX(

CU full of crap!!!

dismantle...

hold all MCB's & RCDS upside down switch & dust...

loads comes out..

re-assemble..

then working ok.... no problems!?

as said over 3 years ago
