ok, im looking at a job which is just simply a consumer unit change, and to add a socket for a washing machine.(will spur of socket above)

am i required to test all circuits and record these details or simply the circuit i have modified and record tests required for consumer unit replacement?

i havent come across such a small job yet, normally modifying several circuits or adding a new circuit so i tend to test all circuits then.

however as im only adding 1 socket it seems to be a lot of testing if i have to test all existing circuits

Hi switch

As you are upgrading the CU, you are changing the characteristics of the whole installation, When filling in the EIC cert for the board change you will be required to fill it in so you need to test the whole installation. HTH

+1 if your changing the board then won't you do a pir first to highlight any problems so fully test the install then change the board. Also I'd extend the ring for the new socket rather than spurring but that's what I'd do but it's your call matey.

The requirement of the Regulations is to conduct relevant tests, when making an addition or alteration.

When replacing a CU, some people consider that all circuits should be fully tested, others that a simple R1+R2 is sufficient and others that no testing at all is required.

At the end of the day, it's your decision what to do.

The ESCs best practice guides are all excellent publications. Andy has linked to the one for changing a CU, but they are all good and you should study them all and become familiar with the practices contained therein.

I print off some of the more relevant pages (4 pages to one side of A4) and then laminate and carry with me for reference or to show clients.

The PIR BPG can be extremely useful when you're called in for a second opinion on a PIR laden with 1s and 2s!!

they also have a guide to earthing somewhere - useful for explaining why earthing needs done when people think your just trying to get extra work

I rung the esc and they sent me a big box of leaflets including the earthing and bonding one andy refers to above. Very handy to give to customers so that they know your not looking for work which is unnecessary. I'm crap at explaining things and these leaflets help no end. Cheers
