Does commercial board req rcbo's for every circuit for certification

Sparkytim I looked at that.

How do you quantify and qualify the

competence of the workers in that area?

This was why I quoted as I did.

dont need to quantify competence. simply workers being instructed can get around requirements for RCD's in some cases

Cannot argue with that, Andy; It was the reference

to careless users that was, in my mind, the closer.

More info is needed i think this could be a shop or some other commercial premises open to the public that may well need RCD protection.

Any employed person MUST be instructed, to comply with EAWR, thus there is no requirement for RCD's in ANY location of employment.
Just want to expand on this, you need to make sure that the company have a policy not to let staff bring in their own electrical appliances without them being undergoing PAT before use. I'm sure you also need written confirmation from the client that it is ok to omit rcd protection for socket outlets.

Hi Andy,

I have seen guidance somewhere. Might be best practice guide on Electricity Safety Council. I 'll have a look now.

Robin,

That is correct, however if they don't then they would be non compliant anyway!

Also a bit of an error/typo on my part above.

The "location of employment" bit, should really be where the electrical equipment is only accessible to employees.

Say in the public lounge of a Hotel, even though a place of employment it would be nigh on impossible to stop anyone pugging in as it were, thus there may be a requirement for RCD's, same perhaps as Hotel rooms, but, not necessarily RCBO's

but if you choose to fit an rcbo in say a commercial kitchen due to the damp environment with steam, washing of floors etc, etc, then theres also nothing stopping putting rcd/rcbo protection in as a safety measure ;)

When i wired the kennels which was done to the 16th edition all sockets were RCD protected even though it is commercial. There is no way i would leave kennels that may even be washed down at some point with out RCD protection and as most of the staff are girls you just can't be too careful.

Omission of rcds (hope the link works)

http://electrical.theiet.org/wiring-matters/41/rcds.cfm?type=pdf

Also in the OSG page 27 section 3.6.2.2

Andy is right as there is nothing that I can see which says that you need written confirmation.

However if you read the article in Wiring Matters then this is just general good common sense advice to cover your xrse when the shxt might hit the fan and your client will try and lie through their back teeth to get you into trouble!

Also I think this example for ommiting RCD's would really be in a staff only office low risk area, in a company with good h&s procedures that are enforced.
