The generation meters I've fitted so far (not many admittedly!) are manufactured to accept seperate tails whereby you can take the outer sheath into the apperture for the connection and thus maintain protection of the conductor insulation.
This is not possible when using 4mm T & E etc so I've been installing an adaptable box with holes in the top, tight under the meter and passing the conductors through like that - are other people using similar methods?
