I'm not sure if anyone will ever read this again, but just in case ... my problems have been solved.
I found a local MCS registered installer, and he advised me to contact Ofgem, as he wasn't sure what could be done. Ofgem were a bit vague in their response as they could not comment on hypotheticals. However, they sent a link to the document I've attached, and the apendices at the end proved to be enough for my installer to work with and he installed a bi-directional meter this morning. Now I just need to wait for him to provide a new certificate and a schematic of my system for me to send off to Octopus, and then my FiT payments should resume, from my June reading - and carry on until 2036, so well worth it in the long run.
Thanks to everyone for their useful advice. I hope others might find this useful in the future.
