Consumer Unit Change

Hi guys.I've been an electrician since 2001 but been in streetlighting.Just applied to niceic for part p. Been asked to change a old 4 way wylex 3036 board to 17th edition board. I was thinking of a 10 W 2x5 unit twin Rcd. Any ideas on the cost I should be quoting for this job.Obviously i'm not going to do this job before I pass my nic assesment.

why do you want a 10 way ????

why not do the job for your assessment ???

why not have a board of 4 rcbos with a few spare ways

0r a 6 way dual board

you need to assess if there may be a possibility for extra ccts in the future

It's a 4 way unit,Cooker,shower,sockets+lighting.

When i opened the board there was extra cables in both the sockets and lights.Someones just tapped off for extras.

Was gonna find out what they where for a put them on there own circuit on meaning a 6 way unit,allow say 2 spares meaning 8.

Thought 5/5 is quite a common size.Theres enough room for a 10way and there's not a great deal difference in the price of the board i dont think

Managed to sort 2 jobs to give to NIC for assesment

That sounds like a good plan.

As for pricing it, you'll have to charge what you think the job is worth. We haven't seen the job and we don't know what your overheads are!

how long do you think it will take you ?

bear in mind you are going to spend time tracing those extra cables,,testing etc

is the bonding up to scratch ???? do you need to upgrade the tails etc ???

sounds a bit cheap, mark up for your materials?

it might only take a day but its a cu change with testing, your not on day rate

i take it all bonding, meter tails ect are adequate

Russ, if you start doing cheap work, people will only ask you to do cheap work for them in the future, not a good way to start a business.

looked at a job not long back cu and gas meter in garage, stop cock in WC below cu on other side of wall.

the whole idea of it just fills me with happiness

I think you'll find that CU change will take more than 5hrs. I would allow all day. You've already mentioned signs of "additions" which are going to need investigation and testing. And if they are DIY bodges there may be remedial work.

Personally I would not bother with a split RCD board. I don't like them; if it was me then it would be 1 RCBO per circuit.

Scenario....split RCD board, circuits equally split. Earth fault on one circuit and you lose half the house AND if you aint tested owt before fitting said 'work of the devil and all his little cohorts' board you could be there much longer than 5 hours. I could well be wrong in my thinking [see wife for details] but,........... :coat

Good point, kerching. I have a Denmans Curve 14 way board with 8 RCBOs waiting to be fitted. Just started using Denmans because their prices are much more competitive than other local wholesalers.
