I need an immersion heater replacing.  I have two elements in the tank that go in the side. The one at the bottom has packed up so obviously that one needs to be replaced asap although the one half way up works at the moment. The hot water tank is about 5ft high or 1500mm in the new langauge.

How much to change this element and is it worth doing both while the work is being done.

The bottom one gets most use as that's on every night at the cheap rate.

The actual heater normally only costs about £30 (more if it's a stainless unvented tank)

If all goes well, it's an hour or so work to drain it, change the heater and re fill.

If it's a bugger, it can take a lot longer. If there's no stopcock, or the stopcock won't shut off..... So many variables.

If it all goes pear shaped, you need a new tank.

And I've even found them where the heater is round the back of the tank, so you can't get to it at all without removing the tank.

Before you rip it out, check it really is a faulty heater, not just a faulty thermostat.

Refering back to the OP  Yes I would say change both while its drained down ,  it could pack up next week.

As said above , there is a possibility of the cylinder twisting and rupturing but you have to go for it I'm afraid .  Thats the worst senario , usually they're OK .   Buy the better quality specially if you have hard water .

Welcome to the forum, do make sure you have the thermostat and element tested with a suitable meter before actually taking anything out. If its just the thermostat they just slide in/out.

i dont do them anymore, just not worth the hassle TBH,

but if I was to it would be IRO £150 each due to all of the above named variables.

as said, check the stat etc to make sure it is actually the element that needs replacing.

thank you for the replies,

but can anyone tell me the cost of changing the element(s)

Just had a look through some old invoices...

the last Imm Heater I replaced was May 2010...

traditional top mounted 27" element in copper cylinder..

total cost £92.50 parts & labour.  {couple of hours work}]

Not quite the same as what you have.. but gives a ball park figure for you to consider..

but as the others have said if the element is a bit of a tricky sod it could be £150+
