I took down a light fitting this morning and discovered not only an asbestos ceiling but also asbestos covered cables!

I disconnected the fitting and tucked the cables back into the void then covered the affected area with a rubble sack and some tape. I then contacted an asbestos removal firm on behalf of the client could I have done more?

I am now paranoid about asbestos on my clothes, been a while since my last asbestos awareness course from what I can't remember you have to dispose any clothing?

???

Blue duck I have done a power point presentation on this.

Can I send it to you?

I think that is probably the lelast of your worries,

Did you get radioactive the last time you had a microwave meal, or went through the scanner at the airport.?

Read what Techie has to send you  .

Was it an Artex ceiling  by any chance ?    Some Artexes contain asbestos apparently .

It did, however my mate through the 70's,80's and 90's used it every day as he was in demand for that type of ceiling and wall finish.

He's still with us and looks very well for a 67 year old.

We used to make holes in the ceilings for slight adjustments for ceiling pendants or R80/R63 downlights, got it all over us, never thought it was bad.

How much do yu need to inhale before its too bad ??

The laggers on steam pipes I think are the ones that have been hit the worst.

First off Thanks to Technician For the ppt :) was a good read and helped clear a few things up that had fallen out of the grey matter :)

It wasn't an artex ceiling I think It was AIB (asbestos insulation board ) covered with polystyrene tiles.

It was the cable that really got me spooked just like vir/cloth but it was white, I have a picture I will try upload later.

Not really overly concerned about myself after years of abuse and exposure to substances hazardous to health I wasn't overly concerned but I was thinking about possible side affects for my family as my son is 2 years old.

Your cable could be one of the old Butyl  heat resist. flexes   .    Fairly tough  outer sheath with a braided texture.

Asbestos insulated cable was used for Imm. Htrs  final connection , often from a J/B  not a DP switch .  It did actually look like asbestos,  a single core  old size 3/.036  along with a bare earth wire .

I believe the correct advice on finding the stuff  is to walk away and report it .

If you look up "Fuseboards , rewirable, with asbestos arc pads , what action do I take ?"      It says ...employ an electrician to make the board dead,  dress up in space suit, wrap Db. in plastic,   cut off all the cable - conduits etc  entering the board,  remove it from the wall and dispose off in the proper manner.

It assumes you are NOT an electrician.

Duck,

Get your clothes washed immediately, twice, it is probably too late for you to be told not to take them into the house!

You do realise that  your client has committed a criminal offence punishable by imprisonment?

Apologies for the hastily written reply before.

I had to take down the fitting as the fuse went every time the switch was on and there was no light in the extremely badly made extension.

here is the offending item

Fortunately there was some things I remembered from the awareness course I undertook as a sub for another firm which lasted about 2 hrs and I never got anything to say I had done it........ So the clothes are in a bag in the van also showered when I got in :)

Still might have to burn the van tho  :innocent

The woman on the phone also mentioned that it was an offence but did not elaborate.?

There wasn't any way the client would have known about it they jus stared blankly as I tried to explain it all to them.

As for reporting it there is no asbestos police so I contacted several firms and recomene the most helpful.

The boards with flash pads I leave well alone and tell the client but most of them probably wouldn't survive a rewire

What is a mangle? I thought you were sposed to bash them against a rock down by the river?

Thanks again for the useful input   :D
