do the bare minimum make sure you take your breaks and finish on time. Only do your own job and nobody elses. . They cannot sack you for no reason. :coat
and if the time comes that someone is to be made redundant, if you do above then you have just nominated yourself as that person.

and as for 'they cannot sack you for no reason', im sure damaging the van is more than enough reason.

TBH this post is a waste of time...

You have discussed a pay rise with your boss already and he/she has already said NO.

Either you accept this and get on with your job or you don't and you look for other employment

1st point....They cannot just pick anyone to be made redundant these days, you have to at least go through selection criteria. This is point scoring, ie for experience, time at this employment, quals, good reports etc. If you find you are above other people in a point score system you should not be selected and you can sue for wrongful dismissal if dismissed. There is a correct way of doing things and employers like to do things the wrong way which means they can be sued.

2nd......."When you start a job, you agree to the wage."......Thats correct, so if you donot get a payrise in line with inflation, you are in fact being paid less than agreed.

3rd......".im sure damaging the van is more than enough reason"..........You can drive over screws anywhere, and pebbles can hit your windscreen at anytime. Just dont be seen doing it.

Mr Tesla,

1st point, they can because there is no statutory criteria for selection, this criteria is down to the employer, they can select what they like as long as it is not discrimanatory as far as the law goes.

2nd point, there is no statutory legislation entitling you to an inflation linked pay rise, you take the money for doing the job, you have no right to a pay rise, check the law. Thus no pay rise does not mean that you are being paid less than you agreed it means your cost of living has increased, your problem not your employers.

3rd point, I know may people who have been dismissed for damaging works vehicles even in accidental situations, and some have even taken their employers on and to tribunal, soem with Union backing, they lost.

Make of this what you will, as I am sure you will

There is no standard point scoring system, and smalloutfits don't work this way anyway. All they have to decide is that your skill set doesn't match the business requirements, which may require an experienced sparky or an apprentice, or a tea lady. It is incredibly hard to prove descrimination, and very easy to sack people they don't like - especially those suspected of being a pain in the rear.

What I do think some of employed people don't realise is how hard it is to run a business in the first place, or how many hours the boss puts in to create employment opportunities in the first place. I currently spend about 35-40 hours on the job, and about 20 hours a week doing the paperwork side. At the moment I'm taking 3 days out to instigate an ISO9000 system to meet MCS criteria and write up several PIRs and generate quotes for follow on work, which will in turn hopefully make enough money to keep the lad employed, and pay my mortgage for another month as well as clear the business overheads, which are quite significant. Turning up, getting told what to do, and getting paid is a firkin doddle, and if the boss if off playing golf with some business contacts, it's probably getting the work to keep you employed.

Firstly i agree roughly with one point that Nicky makes

that is to do only what is required during the day

cut out the extras you would do for nothing

did this for at my last company and it woke them up to what we were actually doing for free, what extra tools we had purchased for ourselves.

all departments dug their heals in saying 'thats not in our budget we are not doing it' what a suprise management woke up

as for redundancy all big companies have to notify you of a 90 day consultation where they evaluate each person on a score system...........

Nicky,

Did you win or did they loose?

Perhaps they did not fight the case too hard because it may have been cheaper to pay out than have you on the books being a pain in the proverbial and costing them tyres & windscreens on a regular basis...?

They lost cos they didnot follow any procedure whatsoever, the boss was a wannabe gangster, treating everyone like dirt. It was only a matter of time for anyone who had been employed long term. He wanted to get rid so he didnot have to pay holidays or anything. He had just taken over the company and we were dropping like flies, but i stuck my heels in, iwasnt giving up without a fight. headbang

me cos he went bust 5months later cos of his aggresive bad atitude .....and ive got a better paid and more rewarding job now.
