Does anyone know what the small grey box is on the garage

At a guess I'd say it's a stand alone pir for previous light? Didn't you say the original light was just a light? If so this would be the pir that should've activated it.

Yes my previous garage light was just like a switch on light wired straight to the fuse box. Exact same light as my previous outside switch on kitchen light. Here’s a better pic



If this box is wired straight to my mains, can I disconnect it safely to do away with it? Thanks

It looks very much like an MK  Masterseal Photocell to me ( or possibly a PIR....hard to confirm as pic isn't too,clear)

Great thanks, would this just be tapped into the same cable that’s supplying the light?

The feed from switch or CU depending on how wired would go to this first before continuing on to light. 

Have a look inside the garage and follow the wire to source. If it is no longer required then you can disconnect, be sure to isolate power first.
