Mate asked me about this problem with hi phone, any suggestions folks?

One morning came down to use the phone but found no dial tone, checked other phones in house (wireless type and just plugged into mains) and again no dial tone, internet was working. Phoned home number and had engaged tone. No changes had recently been made to the circuit.

Suspected broadband filters, changed over nothing changed. Bought new filters but still no change.

Removed master socket cover and plugged phone into the test socket, dial tone appeared.(3 extensions off the master socket, 2 hardwired a 1 a plug in extension cable for computer + filter for phone).

Replaced socket but again dial tone disappeared.

Replaced master socket with new socket & back plate.(NTE5 with no integrated filter)

Plugged everything back and dial tone is present but faint and only lasts about 10 sec's

Disconnected extensions, replaced socket and plugged in phone but same faint dial tone which quickly disappears and does not return unless I remove the master socket from the test socket and then replace again.

Master socket is removed and computer extension lead and phone connected to test socket, only way phone will work?

Possibly the phone is the issue but why then does it work in the test socket?

If anyone has any idea what possibly is going on please let me know.

It sounds like you have a short circuit somewhere,,,

Remove all phones, filters and other telephone / internet equipment, then disconnect each extension individually and reconnect while testing; you'll he found the problem when the fault reappears;)

Our broadband worked when phone didn't a while back but that was an external fault that BT came and fixed. To me it sounds you have a short like nozzie says. Do an insulation test on cables at 250 volts with everything disconnected and see what you get.

Thanks gents, but from what he is telling me and from his description, he has disconnected everything right back to the master socket, then removed the faceplate from the master socket, and plugged the phone straight into the test socket where it worked, etc etc. see his description, appears quite a strange one to me.

Thanks again

well.....

he his not telling you everything,,,,,,,

what did he do before it went faulty ?????

you need to disconect everthing leaving the master socket,,,,then test....

then add one at a time until you find the fault...

So master socket works which means its an internal fault that is the idea of NTE5 socket so you can test line and not pay BT to come out and charge you

You have proved it is not an external fault by plugging into the test point, so the fault is internal!

Disconnect all internal extensions and reconnect one at a time until fault reappears.

A favourite is cable nicked by a carpet fettlers knife or gripper rod.

If an extension cable runs externally then look for water ingress damage. Daughters rabbit nibbled through ours and water got in..... :coat

i could go on and on about faults i came across

best one was a connection unit next to a bookcase

customer so irate about having an intermittent phone service,,,,,,,cutting the story short,,,,she had smashed it with the hoover but didnt know what it was

3 service calls to get that little gem out of her
