the house prices in poorer parts of the Eu was speculative investors, they couldn't buy in the wealthier places so exported the property madness abroad. Bit like Cornwall, very poor area with sod all wages, but very high house prices due to wealthy types from the South East. I think the prices have since collapsed again with the demise of the banking sector.
