Round this way many council properties built in the 50s have metal door frames with architrave switches cut into them. The conduit enters at the top and single core cables drop down to the switch. No back box. Although i have seen this many times i recently had to do a PIR & 'failed' it only as it was not earthed. I commented about the containment issue only as the frames are all steel & i suppose a big switch box ( IMHO not really correct)

Crikey where do you live, Her Majesty's Prison?

I have seen these metal frames before, they came complete with door and locks already fitted, this was a block of flats in Oxford back in the late 70's, not seen them since, the walls were made with Stramat board or something like that, compressed straw with layered paper both sides, the board had a couple 20mm holes top to bottom, and you cut out for boxes with jigsaw then glued box in with Stramat glue before straw expanded, it was a load of s**t.
