Heater matrix has gone today on the Berlingo, now have a sodden footwell & stinky steam from the vents

Guess I'll be trying to get the dash out over the weekend

If you want to drive the van whilst you sort the heater out, then connect the in/out pipes together under the bonnet.

Don't forget to remove the carpets/mats and wash off all that spilled antifreeze. Clean out as much as you can from behind the facia and the off the dash as well. If you simply leave it to dry: 1. it might not and 2. the chemicals will hasten corrosion of metal parts and 3. it'll stink forever.

dash: the body panel your feet rest on and that the facia is mounted on (separates the cabin from the engine bay). So called from the days of horse drawn coaches. the dash is usually part of the monocoque structure these days rather than a distinct panel like, say, the boot lid or bonnet.

as said above, been there before. My matrix went miles from home, hot steamy water everywhere. Fixed it with a 19mm socket inbetween the in and out, both pipe cliped onto it.

not quite heater matrix, but had a water leak in my astra a few weeks ago.... about 15-20ltr of water later, got home. fortunately, changed plan first thing in the morning, and went somewhere about 40 miles away instead of 60

I used to work for a recovery company based at a service area on the M1 had a couple of Russians come in early hours one saturday morning with a leaking heater matrix , they was returning by Skoda (the old upside down skip shape) to home. They had little money left so all I did was a small copper pipe and linked out the matrix, they got all the way home safe and sound , they wrote a thank you letter a few days later

those definitions are completely different to the ones my mates know and they are VAG master techs(not fitters, they have to take a week long course with exam every other year to retain the qualification).

your description of dash is the bulkhead isn't it?

well i successfully missed it but killed that hedge which wasn't as tasty when grilled.

yeah it slid sideways for ages but then hit the root of that hedge and toppled over, was only doing 5-10mph when it went over.

they didn't fix the roof as that would have written it off apparently!

btw that accident led to a 6 month investigation into the accident(with me suspended from driving company vehicles during the investigation) involving an outside company doing a crash investigation where they measured skid marks, vehicle damage, hedge damage etc and calculate speeds and directions. it ended up with me getting a written confirmation of a verbal warning for possibly speeding by 4mph as that road is a single carriageway NSL which for a van based van(as opposed to a car derived van) the speed limit is actually only 50mph and he calculated that i was travelling at 54mph but this was on false information regarding weather/road conditions from my employer(it was damp and they told him it was bright, clear and dry).

the guy leading the investigation at work wouldn't talk to me or look me in the eye for nearly a year

tbh at the time i wasn't aware of the different speed limits for vans having never owned one or used one regular before this job, i take it by the tone of your reply you have never done anything wrong?
