Quick question to everyone really,

When you go to buy a new bit of equipment, say a multifunction tester, what sways you to buy from one company rather than the other? Is it just the price? past sales history? or freebies?

There are so many ways to market products these days and was curious to try and work out what sort of freebies sell a product?

Everyone likes something for free but what makes it worthwhile?

A piece of test equipment? tools? gadgets like ipods or heated jackets? or is it just the price?

I ask this becuase it seems silly to waste time and money on freebies people don't want. So I put the question to you lot.......what do you want?

i hope the extension leads really long :D :^O

its normally price for me...... as the freebie usually isn't what i actually want.

but if there was a selection of freebies to choose from..... that might have a small bearing on my choice of supplier.

(however the items on selection must be of high quality and likely to use everyday........ like ck combie cutters, tool bags, screwdrivers, head torch etc.....

:Salute :Salute:Salute:Salute:Salute

Ah Ha! so a freebie would swing it, but it would have to be something you would use "work wise"

Oh and the heated jacket is cordless ;) and will be coming to a website (ours) soon enough

think everything you said contributes to my choice, obviously gotta be a good price. But I would be happy to pay a small amount more for a reliable company (such as yourself :)

I do always like a good freebie too, and yeah its definately gotta be useful.

Choice of work stuff would be best- plug in testers, voltage prongs etc, everyone needs something but often different things.

I know when i bought my tester (fluke 1652) the leads that came with it were terrible. So maybe a better test lead set?

Maybe free postage would be a good freebie/ sales tactic too?

The lead set is a good idea, as included leads are never that great.

We have free delivery on everything. Yet so many people don't realise this as I think it's the norm to pay carriage.

So that's another vote for a work related freebie then :D

Price always,

But will pay a little more for a good reputation, like fletch mentioned.

Freebies should bear a relation to the product purchased, case(or leads etc) if you buy a meter, free neon if you buy megger :slap

Deffo needs to be work biased imo,

But could even be some tat novelty thing if original item is cheap to start with, eg, PC suite with a USB beer cooler.

Deffo dont try and pass off tat as a quality product, buy a

Discount codes would be good on products you hold

that would hold my attention to the website

such as ' buy this

price and service, would prefer you knock the price of the freebie off the thing rather than get something you already have, like a martindale socket checker or test lamps

Price mainly for me. Also when you see postage charges are on top of the purchase price makes me look elsewhere to see if its cheaper without the postage.

One more thing that kills the deal for me also is when the first calibration is charged for.

Price for me too, as long as it doesn't affect quality - and it does what it says on the tin. Although I do like free bees they need to be relevant to the product IMO.

How about for each MFT, a free in depth DVD on testing in the real world. How to use the product to get round typical problems etc..

I spent 15K on a cheap 0.7l unbreakable thermos and got a fire alarm system thrown in!!!

Personally I like free Polo shirts NOT Baseball caps. There comes a time when you are too old for baseball caps. Saw a bloke on Blackpool prom yesterday, baseball cap on, man-bag, shorts that you could tell his religion AND what he had for breakfast....looked like he should have been on a register somewhere.

My ex-employees would like anything as a freebie....why buy sockets from WF when you can get them at 3 times the price from CEF AND some dewalt sunglasses FFS!!!!!!...rant finishes:coat

bacon butties at the wholesalers when the rep from tat sockets ltd is there trying to sell his wares!?

I know what you mean slips, but sometimes wholesalers can get stuff at the right price but couldnt justify the mark up required to sell them on so will lump them in with other stuff to make it seem more sale-able.

if they can almost match the price(say by a fiver or such) but your getting a case as well that would cost a tenner then its a deal,

the case maybe only cost them 2quid but they need a mark-up(

I have had the local CEF salesrep on my back this week

he said that they will price match or better SF prices

1% 0f something is better than 5% of nothing

got a feeling Citys are feeling it

My local CEF are doing OK and are very busy at the moment, had breakfast with them this weekend.

As for freebies, Kerching raised a good point, employees will often go and buy some expensive stock items just to get the freebie. I think any freebie should be work related, I personally like the voucher system. After that is would be test leads, and for any tester the first calibration.

Some good points by all.

The frustrating thing about a freebie is that I feel it alienates anyone who A.Dosn't want one or B. Already has one.

But I think you have something when it comes to the cases, leads and calibrations. All these things either run out or get knackered, but to give them all away while keeping quality isn't that cost effective.

So....if you had the choice which would you prefer with a new tester?

A decent case? (Or spare case in most cases)

A decent lead set?

Or a free calibration certificate (In a plastic sleeve so it's decent)
