Go for the German build any day. Have always been a fan and have a59 plate BMW 3 series at the mo. Fantastic
Yep you're spot on. Somehow managed to get one as a replacement whilst my car was in the bodyshop. Only a 318d, but had the MSport pack and it was a very nice drive.

So nice I put about 1800 miles on it in 9 days.

You're obviously all smaller than me, and perhaps I expected more of a BMW. I found the MSport 320i to be absolutely awful, and the 3 series in general wasn;t a fun place to be. Cheap and nasty inside, cramped pedals, suspension was completely useless for anywhere other than a newly tarmacced track and the engine would be more suited to something I'd use to mow the lawn. The 5 series doesn;t get much better, the decent trim levels and space are better but the petrol engines are still a bit pony.

I wouldn;t shell out any money on one any time soon, you're paying over the odds for a mediocre car just because it has a BMW badge on it.

I have carefully considered several motors in my quest. In the end I decided an estate would be the most practical which did limit my choice.

Audi A4/A6 expensive and basically a VW

BMW expensive and later ones have run flat tyres - I want comfort!

Mercedes C class - Tempting but scared off by price of spares and servicing

Honda Accord - My second choice and I have a couple of exec models lined up.

Jag X type 2.0/2.2 diesels - great reviews, great value for money, good looks, and largely ford underpinnings make it relatively cheap should you need parts.

Badge mean nothing. Can't call the latest model cheap, seen a lot worse in other makes. Can't really comment on the pedals as the one I had was an auto. The ride was firm but didn't bother me as I'm not to much of an old fart:O

Sorry, I think one of us has the wrong end of the stick. I didn;t say it was cheap, I said it was overpriced, and the suspension I find too firm, not because I am some old bloke who can;t do firm suspension, but because when I sling it into a corner on an A road at a fair rate I want it to go where I want it to, not hit the white line and then launch itself through the nearest hedge due to the shopping-trolley-full-of-bricks like handling.

Audi A4/A6 the A4 is quite nice, miles better than the previous model. I wouldn't buy a new one though. Goes for every make and model that though:O.

BMW Run flats are crap agrred. Change them when you need to and pick up a spare wheel.

Mercedes C class A good local garage who know what they are doing will look after one of these no probs and it won't cos the earth.

Honda Accord Never liked Jap cars:O

Jag X type 2.0/2.2 diesels yep you're probably right in what you've already saidApplaud Smiley

I bow down and appologise lurcio sir, was opposing the comment of them being cheap inside. Didn't think the handling was too bad, especially for a mid size family car. Maybe an A4 Quattro would be been of course.

too firm suspension doesnt equate to bad handling car automatically.

a bad handling car will always be a bad handling car,

in just the same way a BMW will always be a bag of ****e.
