hi all, i have a small query im looking for some help on.. i know this can be a tricky subject however..

for arguments sake, if a supplier says its ok to pull the main service fuse in order to allow you to fully isolate the tails for a c/u change. do you wear gauntlets/gloves for pulling main fuse and if so can anyone reccomend some whee to buy some from? also what class should be used as ive seen a few places and theres so many different class ones .

freaks me out also pulling that fuse, has any one ever heard of anyone else or themselves getting blasted, also never tryed any kind of gloves but i think i will google it

i always wear gloves for pulling main fuse. and certain other work if i think necessary.

i get mine from ITL. for most use, you need class 00 (working voltage 500v, test voltage 2.5KV)

Assuming we were allowed to pull them, which of course, we are not , then I'd say the modern ones are as safe as pulling fuses on a live DB , switch the load off before pulling . If you are leaving it out for any time then replace the carrier without the fuse to cover the live terminal.

Some of the really grotty ,metal case ones can be a bit dodgey and if you are not confident then get the meter guys in.

Normaly i use a set of grips but will get some gloves, on sort of the same thing , i was working in a hotel the other day, popped out and on return caught the owner using my screwdrivers to lift a floorboard up..**************** once someone has messed with them i never trust them again..the screwdriver that is, i tryed to explain that my life could depend on the condition of my tools, but he just looked at me like a pleb

With that username I feel you are setting yourself up for a fall!

:D

Adult and the taxman...im interested though, on the few ocasions that i have gotten a shock..it has just felt like a mild tingle, a while back i cut through a cable that was supposed to be isolated...and it chomped my cutters..so i would not fancy a dead short, but what your experiance of being shocked..how many times..what was it like...is it addictiveGuinness..prey tell..

Nice link, I was only thinking yesterday I should get some gloves for messing with tails. Only problem is I haven't got a clue what size my hands are :(
Next time the wife holds you (down there) note the free space, then hold your hand against hers. Go to wholesaler show your member and he will get Reginald to try them on one by one until they match.

I presume you meen if your splitting the tails in to a henley block or something...surely you pull the fuse on that one ..no.. :yawn

yeh i would be lying if i said that i have not...was talking about this in another thread though..dont mind putting the tail in so much..but stripping it live freaks me out a bit..more i think about it..gonna get some gloves

I usually disconnect tails at meter then mess with henleys. But have watched local DNO guy work live, stripping ends and cable armour several times - he's obviously done it for many years, but strikes me as a foolish bloke. The younger blokes usually wear insulated gloves and a pair of cotton gloves over the top, which makes sense to me!
