I blame the OP!

Anyway, sort of getting back to the GCE theme but staying with the political direction this is taking, a little "did you know?":

We once had the GCE O'levels and also CSE's. There was a move to combine these into the current GCSE. The GSCE was born BUT it was thought in various quarters to be a poor replacement for various reasons. It needed 2 years more "tweaking". Thatcher apparently agreed. BUT............the teaching unions voicing concern over the dumbing down were at the time quite powerful. Thatcher decided that to delay the GCSE introduction would be seen as a sign of weakness in the face of union power. Hence they were rushed into being..........

Nothing like a conspiracy theory on a Friday night!

(BTW I went to grammar school, didn't want to but was forced as my brother before me had and I'd passed the 11+. Hated the place and couldn't wait to get home to all my mates who went to the local comp. I pretty much wasted the opportunities given to me etc. "I had a FIGHT with the PE teacher!" doesn't now seem to have the kudos it once did! Mind you he was very good about it. Now, every time my boy does well and tells MY dad he says "All I ever did was pick up your dad (me) from detention for fighting!". No 6th form for me then. My apprenticeship and college sorted me out thank God! Funny to think my boy is hopefully on track to go to uni!

CSEs.....i , believe it or not, was considered thick as a whale omlette in maths. So my parents were advised to put me in for the CSE. I think they had to pay a couple of quid . Anyway the hardest question was "a table is measured to be a height of 1 ?.....? And i had to choose the height from a list of units including V, kg, j etc. i took a punt on metres. My mate did history, one of the questions was a pic of Hitler....question "who is this man?".......i got a grade 1 ( may have been an A as it was 42 years ago!) O level anyway

I seem to recall a CSE Grade 1 was considered equivalent to a GCE Grade C?

Got a young relative in Ireland possibly coming back to do uni over here. Seems their "Higher Cert" is viewed here by UCAS as "............two thirds of an A level".

Can't help but appreciate efforts to standardise things! Just so sad it can be used for political gain!

Btw, we've decided to have our boy's Math GCE re-marked - he was only 2 points off of an A* so worth a crack I reckon.

CSE's were grade 1 to 5. A Grade 1 CSE was considered equal to a grade C O level.

I wasn't "allowed" to do all 3 sciences, so reluctantly I chose History instead as they wouldn't let me do biology. I barely paid attention so was put in for a CSE for that not O level, and without a jot of revision got a grade 1.

But then on those days a Grade C O level was considered a pass, a D oe E a fail. these days the notion of failing an exam is just not allowed, that would disadvantage you to much to have ever failed someting.

All this has reminded me of a whistle blower announcing that  exam papers should only have a number  ( No name)  because they were instructed to "Mark down"  the girl's papers .     I'm sure this was true.

The reason was , the girls were brighter than the boys but they couldn't be allowed to take all the better jobs  because they'd soon pack up to have babies etc.

Absolute disgrace .      Must have been the 1970's  as it was raised by our friend's daughter .

And THAT has reminded me of another , somewhat strange thing .   She had  written to a pen pal in Poland apparently , a reply came back , the envelope was stamped ......." Opened by the UK censor"    It was resealed with a marked sticky tape.     Never heard of anything like that ...again 1970,s
