Hey all, I have a problem with this washing machine and how it is wired(at the wall), my problem is without a multimeter I am unable to tell for certain which wire is live.

It looks something like that though I'll upload a pic if needed

My only certainty is that Ground is either Ground or Neutral

Any ideas on how best and safest to work this out?

Explain better what it is you are trying to connect. You say "at the wall" normally you have a flex and a plug on the end of it. For years now plugs have been fitted by the manufacturer so you don't even need to do that.

So presumably you want to fit a plug, then what are the colours of the cores in the cable, and what type of plug?

That would be best, someone will need to allow you to do that first.

So not certain at all then.

I think without a pic it is going to be a best guess affair, which is never good. Usually you would have a flex with a brown, blue and green/yellow in it. If you do and you are confused then don't touch anything and get an electrician to connect up. IF it is something else then some more info would be good, but the pic as mentioned would be best.

It would appear i need 10 posts.... I'll be back!
Well there is also that way of doing it.

In the meantime could you not just describe what you have? I do not know why this is a difficult thing as the wires should all be coloured as per standards.

sorry i had coloured the letters in the first post but apparently that didnt work so well

it goes:

Red  | Black  | G/Y

Blue | Brown | G/Y

close to limit so bare with i'll post a pic soon

All colours look standard there, what is it you are having problems with?

I have a feeling you and electrical DIY tasks will not be a good match.

Yes as per previous reply, that's connected wrong.

Brown goes to red

Blue goes to black.

What's it fed from?

Oh, and put the cable sheath under the cable clamp.

That is how it was wired before i touched it, my problem is that washing machine has died (after years) so will be installing a new one, do i follow its current (wong) wiring or just wire it up correctly?

I cannot believe this is even a question.

Did it spin backwards?
No, clothes came out dirtier.

Dont know what to tell you... better safe(ish) than sorry? Best I got

As it should be and always should have been then. If you dont hear from me again then it all went terribly ;)

Hmmm - Seen this pic on another forum.  It did not last long there.

3 things I can see wrong.

What fusing have you got for the flex. I do hope this is not just a spur off a 32A ring.
