Hello all, I'm John :)

I completed my electrical apprenticeship back in 1985, with a BTEC in Electrical & Electronic Engineering also completed. Later on the 14th edition of the regs. Experienced in PLC controls etc. Currently working in manufacturing as a supervisor, been off the tools for 10 years.

If I was to move back into electrical work, what sort of courses would I need to complete if I was to get into testing etc. I'm considering this as my son, who's nearly finished his BTEC diploma, has had no success in gaining an apprenticeship and I was thinking that I could set up myself and take him on as an apprentice. Am I nuts ???

Any advice is most welcome

Welcome to the forum. Are you nuts? Well I think we all are.

Your background would give you a good standing and start point, you would need to gain the 17th edition city and guilds certificate, and if your plan is to test only then the 2391 would be an asset. The market is very competitive and it is not as easy as most training companies would have you believe.

Surely the OP with all his experience only needs to do the "short course" route. He must have all the practical experience already?

I think the OP could simply do the 17th 2 day thingie then sit the exam,

same with the 2391 if he wants that as well, which, as Manator says, is very desirable for testing.

I couldnt just sit the 17th (2382) as I had only previously got my 15th,  :Blushing   [never done my 16th :innocent   ]

It is the likes of the OP that the 5WW course was designed & envisaged for, along with those who had been doing the job for years, competently, but had no formal qualifications, but buckets of experience.

They were never intended as conversion courses for someone with no related experience and competence.

They've done away with 2391, you've got to do 2394 & 95 to get full testing & Inspection under your belt now. They're around £900 to complete where I am and can be done on a week or so crash course.

Good luck.

Jo
