hi everyone i got your website on google .

I am currently based in Shanghai , China working on a new construction of drilling rig , as you can imagine the Chinese sparks are not realy up to speed , spark one day next day welder then painter etc .

Our employers have asked us to set up like a training course to get them up to speed , problem is all my college notes and course details are in the house in UK .

If anyone could send current iee regs , notes on COMPEX installation or basically any paper work associated to selecting cable size , containment segregation min and max distances standards etc etc .....any codes of practice , basically any information that i can download and print off then i can get my Chinese interpretator to translate to start the courses

Any good websites any help at all greatly appreciated and as the year goes on we shall be upmanning so opportunities may arise

Thanks in advance

Sean

Welcome to the forum Seanelectrical, I think the best course of action would be to get your employers to purchase suitable training documentation, or employ better qualified contractors. I doubt that UK wiring regs are the best source of reference for rigs in china? Feel free to ask any specific questions you may have but your opening request is rather vague and very open ended?

Doc H.

You can not use the BS7671 IEE regs for electrical installations on rigs

You need something like this IEC 61363-1 Electrical Installations of Ships and Mobile and Fixed offshore Units

Won't IECEX (ATEX) regs. for hazardous areas be involved somewhere?

Off-shore rigs could be wired to any number of standards. Some of the North Sea rigs are wired to American NEC and related standards, for example.

Yes they will, also other regulations dependant on the risk level.

Its totally out of the scope of BS 7671.

It is a specific regulation to that installation, and there are about 5 seperate regulations covering different offshore electrical installations.

Think the OP was covering that by asking for CompEx notes. (CompEx short for Competence in Hazardous / Explosive Atmospheres)

OP I have a set of training notes for Ex stuff I could e-mail you if you PM me your e-mail address. It is not a full set of Ex standards or a full course, so not sure if it is of use to you, but it is an intro course I use to give 1st year apprentices. Do you have the Visual, Close and Detailed check sheets as I am not sure I have them handy and it will be a couple of weeks before I am back in the office to get them.

If anyone else is interested in them just let me know.

Cheers Steve
