I do a LOT of work for these guys, and this is for their own place, so I dont want to go mad on price,

but, Im not a charity, most of the work I do for them isnt mega paying anyway, but its not really bad either,

just trying to meet a nice compromise with this one, and there will be out of hours to do the offices etc.

They say that the wealth gap is widening between the wealthy and the lower rate earners.....

It just seems to me that the COMMON SENSE gap is also widening......

everyone wants a] a descent wage for a good days work and b] good value for money for anything they purchase....

Why is it that those who earn a descent wage..

think others shouldn't earn a descent wage....

£8 per circuit is a *&%$£ JOKE!!!

I was called to one of my older customers today..

Domestic job I rewired back in 2002... They had no power..

I called in slapped me meter on and absolutely zilch...

Dead as a dodo..

no supply coming into property

so the fault is external....

I obviously couldn't do much...

confirmed what was what..

brief chat with the customer

I was there for 30mins tops...

Was about to leave...

wasn't going to charge em as I have done nothing re actual work other than sticking my meter probes on some terminals..

But the guy insists and give me £20..

So if Mr "Joe average" @ domestic installation can figure a bit of knowledge and expert opinion is worth £20 for half hour...

Why can't other "professional bods" in the commercial sector figure that for £8 you get sod al!!!

Hi,

I registered just to post on this topic.

Just a heads up for you guys looking to win EICR jobs.

I work for one of the countries largest EICR test companies who quote roughly £10 per single phase circuit and 2X single rate for 3 phase circuits.

The Test Engineers usually do between 25 - 45 circuits a day. Engineers get paid ballpark £4.00 per single phase circuits, more for 3 phase. Using Megger 1730 meters bluetoothed direct to laptops filling out the boxes as the engineers test. (now moving over to ipads).

Results are sent automatically to head office after the EICR form is complete.

This is all commercial work for factories, hospitals, schools, residential homes etc. usually 600 - 3000+  circuits, no remedials are carried out at time of test unless code 1's.

If there are remedials, remedial teams follow up once the client has agreed. We do rolling 20 percent checks etc over 5 years etc also. Testing, its all we do. So proficiency comes very quickly.

hope this helps.

There is no way you cam properly test anywhere near 40+ circuits a day properly,

And no previous paperwork or even labelling makes that a mockery,

Same old storey of cable monkeys and button pushers,

Who actually interpets these results?

Not having a go at you dingo , but stuff like this is destroying our trade.

25 to 45 circuits per day @ £4.00 ish per circuit...    £100 to £180 ish.?

Wouldn't want to take the drop in pay.

8 hr day.. 25.. 45 circuit...   10mins to 19mins per circuit??

I assume you only work on boards that are all fully marked up

and the customer has all previous test sheets and certificates for you to cross reference??

Of course, the wider world of electrical installations does not always have this  privilege!!

Speed & repetition doesn't always = profficiency..

NOR does it = accuracy..

Experience and knowledge also brings profficeincy..

repetition (such as all we do is testing) can also bring boredom & mistakes!

Dingo does have a point - if you do nothing else all day, speed does increase, problem is, if on a flat rate, then temptation comes to cut corners as well to stand a chanse of earning any money. Next follows dumbing down the staff to reduce labour costs, closely followed by fall in standards - classic large company mentality. Inspections should not be rushed, there's nearly always something tnat needs looking at or double checking.

Paying your lads £4 per circuit as their wage is a very dangerous game!  Their mentality will be to get through as many circuits as possible in a day!  How much testing do you think is really done?

It doesn't matter how many you do per day...

there is a physical limit as to how fast anyone can open a CU to access circuit wiring for inspection...

And any unlabeled CU with no site drawings and no previous certifictes..  for any person,,

is going to be much slower than a fully labeled and documented installation for a bloke who only does one PIR a month!!

Prior knowledge of a particular installation is the greatest influence on how fast you can inspect an installeion..

So if Dingo's boys are doing repeat rolling contracts on the same site they they will have some increase on speed..

BUT...

really that is not much of a comparison for real world unknown installtion..

staring from scratch with no prior documentation!

:popcorn

How do they comply with reg 621.1 if there are no records & still test at this rate.

Answer I suspect, they don't!

Thus the EICR's don't comply with BS7671...

£32 k was cost of last test & Inspection 5 years ago, due again and lowest quote is about £29k, over 400  distribution boards in shopping centre.

I have been in the industry for nearly 25 years and in the Inspection & Testing Industry for 11 Years, 8 1/2 years of which have been running my own very successful company and i need to make the following points:

1. An accomplished Inspection & Test engineer can test on average 30 circuits a day, sometimes less, sometimes more, but on average it equates to 30 circuits.

This is without previous test results or drawings, as in our experience they are of very little use and are very rarely accurate.

2. These larger companies are getting there work in via a team of sales people that have no clue of what is involved on these jobs, they are just concerned with closing the deal. If all a client is concerned with is "Price" then the likes of "The Urinal Hygeine Company" as we like to refer them as, will win every day!

3. When submitting your prices against these larger companies, state the following

a) How many man days you expect to be on site! if you are quoting that a job will take 20 man days, but the "Urinal Lot" are saying it will take 2 man days, you are effectively cheaper! Trust me, this works.

b) Only charge a 3 Phase circuit as 1 circuit. These companies that rip off there clients by charging them as 2 or 3 circuits tend not to get the repeat work.

c) We only carry out testing & inspection, so we are unbiased and our EICR Reports show this. State to your client that you are not after remedial work. Would you take your car to have an MOT and let the garage carry out a long list of repairs???? Think about it!

4. Charge a sensible price! A fair days money for a fair days work. Going in mega cheap is ruining the industry! Look at what these muppets are now charging for PAT Testing!!! You are making a rod for your own backs!

That could backfire on you.

I once took my car for an MOT to my usual garage, but unknown to me it had changed ownership.

If failed on several very minor things, one of which was an exhaust hanger that needed about 1 minutes welding to fix it.

The useless new owner did not do welding. : headbang

I would rather take my car for MOT somewhere that had the means to fix it should it need it. I might not always choose to get them to fix it, but I want that option.
