Try to prevent it getting boring .    One year ago.

Call from the printers I look after,  no hot water to the sink where they wash the press rollers and the works toilets .

Immersion heater has failed after many years of constant use.    Its high up on a platform in the Print Room so ladder job.

Fit an 11" Backer in base of cylinder and run off, giggling like a big silly giggling person. :)

Month later ...no hot water ... back complete with ladder, overheat button has operated :( ....reset it..all is well. :)

Couple of months later I'm there doing a job and its .." Oh  that waters cold again " :(     Bring ladder next day ...reset button , break the seal on the stat and turn it down ...all well....run off like a big daft dog. :)

Another couple of months ...water is cold again ...ladder ... remove heater cap...button has operated :( ... short out the damn thing and ride off into the sunset.  :)

Cost of call backs so far....about  £150 . :(

Working there last week replacing a line of lights ..." By the way the heaters gone again!"

Bring ladder next day plus a replacement stat just in case......   stat contacts are blown to bits. ..fit new stat ..drop ladder back at base.

Next day " Waters not getting hot by the way"  :(

Return yet again today with ladder after giving wholesalers a round of  U No Whats about rubbish goods....... stat is not calling for heat  :C         turn it up from halfway to 3/4 ..stat clicks in ,, heater starts pulling  12.2A   :) .

Reason for the last debacle is the Print Room is very warm ...therefore so is the cylinder water ...it felt cold/cool because you are hot and sticky ....stat was satisfied at my first setting and wasn't kicking in. :_|

I have now left ladder there but hopefully won't need it . :coat

All under guarrantee so no charge other than a new stat FOC .

These new fangled stats with the overheat button that pops out are a right royal PITA.

Nothing but trouble, especially on top mounted immersions. I've even changed one cylinder before now to one with a side mount immersion to "solve" the problem.

I just knew I should have stocked up when the local building merchant was selling off their stock of "old" type thermostats very cheap.

nothing worse than having to go back all the time, but maybe keep a ladder with you? id stuggle to get much work done without mine, used at least a few times per week, sometimes 4-5 times per day.

Ha!

I've just done a PIR and 'observed' that the existing stats don't have over temp cut out :|
Keep that sort of observation to yourself.

My take, is this all came about because of a failed stat caused a tank to boil, and the boiling water / steam venting into a plastic header tank above a childs bedroom caused the tank to rupture, pouring scalding water onto the child with fatal consequences.

Rather than address the siting and design of header tanks, we "solved" it by mandating these super safe thermostats, but with no requirement to retro fit them, so it would have done nothing for that particular case.

So I'm all for a bit of logical risk assessment, and if the header tank is metal, or NOT above a habitable room, then I see no reason to worry about having one of these super safe thermostats.

A few years ago I would have done Andy ,  but I now work a " just take whats necessary policy and a few justincases"  specially as I only use the Escort now and keep the load down to save a bit of fuel.    8 tread steps on the roof rack .  Don't forget I'm trying to stick to a 3 day week these days.

im probably the opposite, take enough spares to fix most problems there and then

My van is in the garage, I have a hire car, I had to do an 80 ish mile round trip today, around an hour ish, pretty much all motorway, to get one part to sort a job out.

NO option, nowhere else to get it, back to site, job sorted in < 15 minutes, client happy, client's client will be happy too.

All paid by my client, no questions!

IF I had had my Transit Jumbo, I would have had the part with me.

Frustrated smiley needed here!

Immersion heaters :red card

Today was all mapped out - busy as a busy thing from 7.00 this morning until 7.30 tonight...........................

Call en route - if I`m passing the brewery, can I get at least one of the printers to work, so they can print dray runs & invoices.

Yeeeeees - can fit that it - won`t take long.

One printer is an HP officejet 8500a - which has decided there is no ink in the brand new magenta cartridge. Thats ok - I only need to print black & white........NO! You can`t do that without magenta???!!!! :C

Finally took the new cartridge out, and re-installed the one from the bin - that the printer said was empty last week. Works fine now :)

Tother printer is a laserjet 1300 - been in my garage for 2 years, so the prints come out a tad grey :slap . It had, however, stopped, with its error light flashing.

Turn it off, count to 10, turn it back on. That`ll be mended now, as well then.

Heading for the office door, when the brewmeister comes in:

"Thank %^&* you`re here. The 1000 litres of lager currently on the boil smells metallic, and there`s a grey scum on the surface  :shakehead   headbang

One of the two 12KW immersions has ruptured, and spewed its innards into the brew...........ever watched 1000 litres of booze go down a drain - its enough to make you weep :_|

The immersions are only 9 months old :red card

So no brewing done today - ordered another unit for next day delivery; and sending this one back for a forensic exam - if its shown to not be "our fault" they`ll reimburse the cost of the immersion.

Client is also after compensation for the lost brew, plus costs incurred for me spending 4.5 hours on site to (quote) "Do SOMETHING!!!!"

By the way: Sainsburys are stocking the beer from this brewery from Wednesday onwards (420 stores around the country). Its in bottles, from "the Gower Brewery". I`d highly recommend it - its the "Gower Gold" :)

Deke - get one of the telescopic ladders. Fantastic things and take up no room
I used one in a mate's house.

to be honest I didn't feel safe using it. I had the fear it was all going to telescope back into itself with me up it.  would never trust a tall version if they made one.

Indirect with a heat exchanger would have saved the brew....
See attached pic - misc 010.JPG

Vessel comes with 2 x immersion mounts - needs to boil for over 1 hr..............

Indirect may have difficulty boiling such a large amount of product????

Thought he was just putting 8 tread steps on his roof rack. They do more than that?
The cylinder is about  4 mtrs high  Pache  ,  not sure how high the telescopics go TBH.    With the 8 tread steps ...I just meant that was what I normally carry on the rack .     Its said that a roof rack increases MPG by 5%   so a permament ladder would double that I'd guess.   Thanks for the suggestion though .

Had a message earlier today ..........the water is only luke warm !!!!!!!      Have to go back yet again on Monday.    I just don't get it .   I will have to turn the stat right up  to the (+)  mark    seeing as there are no temperatures marked on them anymore ................whats all that about ?

incalloy mate - sold by a company specialising in milking machines & breweries ( weird combo) ;)

IIRC, the boil is at about 97 deg. There are no thermostats fitted to the elements - they just boil away for the prescribed period of time..............
