I Hear that the City & Guilds (C&G) 2330 and the AM2 are Changing. Is/are these true?

I have heard rumours about these too. Nothing was said by my lecturers when i did, or completed my 2330 levels 2 & 3.

However, I have been looking through the sister website of our sponsors, and have found the following...

City & Guilds 2330

It has been a while since we sent the last newsletter out and a lot has changed. There are going to be big changes to the qualification structure with the introduction of the QCF framework. It looks possible that there will be 16 units, 8 practical and 8 Knowledge Assessment units to replace the 2330. Nothing is set in stone as of yet and registration for the 2330 will continue until December 2010 with the last certification taking place in 2012 for the Level 2 and 2013 for the Level 3.

AM2

As well as the technical certificate undergoing changes, the staple AM2 looks like it will be quite different next year. Plans are currently in progress to overhaul the AM2 and potentially bring it under a QCF unit. Changes mooted are the removal of the motor control circuit completely, taking out the MIMS (MICC) installation as it is thought to be a specialist cable and taking out the conduit forming as it is thought to be a level 2 skill.

In comes a S plan heating circuit, segregated trunking and data cabling.

Other changes include the trainee having to complete a full Electrical Installation Certificate, including a Schedule of Inspection and a Schedule of Test Results instead of the old method with a couple of random boxes of information.

AM2 Multi choice exam

The AM2 is planned to be split into 4 sections, A - Installation, B - Inspection and Test, C - Fault Diagnosis and a new section D - Knowledge Assessment. The last part is planned to be a 30 question multiple choice exam with a 90% pass mark. The exam will cover health and safety, working at heights, security systems, building regulations, protective devices, hand tool and single and three phase supplies.

JIB Domestic Electrician

Other big changes include the introduction of an NVQ Level 3 Domestic Electrician, an NVQ Level 2 Domestic Installer and making qualifying managers for Part P compliant installations working at level 3 with a portfolio of evidence backing this up.

'C' Course replacement

There is also planned a replacement for the old C certificate, a level 4 Building Services qualification based around electrical installations. We think the C&G number will be 4467 but are not sure at the moment.

New electrical exams

Electrical exams have improved the question base of the 202 and 203 exams and are currently looking at upgrading the 205 exam. www.electricalexams.co.uk

Lets how they bring an end to the 2393 and its equivalents in the process. Otherwise this will be yet another wasted exercise. As for the changes to AM2, pathetic they should be incorporating the changes not removing things to add them.

This is what the scottish trade test multiple choice was like when I did it all those years ago.

I take it the level 3 will be on a lower rate or will this just be another box you can tick for what you want put on your grading card?

If its the latter its a complete waste of time.

Additional snippets:

Training providers have been asked not to schedule any AM2 for December 2009. The new AM2 format will take effect from Jan 2010. For resits in 2010 the new format will apply.

Registration with NAPIT will require completing the 2391 (or equivalent) every 5 years. This is currently believed to be the case.

The JIB Domestic Electrician was apparently "Originally planned for adults but now one managing agent has proposed an apprenticeship for the Domestic Electrician". The managing agent in question is the largest in the country.

More news on the above as and when I receive it.

The 2330 is going, I believe the last registrations will be Dec 2010 as it is not accredited after that. Another thread includes details as I hear they are being proposed, along the line of 8 classroom units and 8 work based units. Maybe Admin could find this thread ; -)

Just to clarify (as I notice this thread had been stickied), the AM2 will now be changing in April 2010 and not December 2009 as had originally been planned. As it is thought by many to be harder to pass the new one, now would be a good time to think of booking up!

Neither are developing apprenticeships in it as the whole topic is still being thrashed about at high level. Most would agree there is no need for it. An electrician is an electrician and the current NVQ can be obtained whether you are domestic or industrial, you just might need some refresher training prior to AM.2.

any time served spark will not need 2393. you should already been qualified/competent enough to join a scam provider
