Is it what you know or who you know ? Help please !

I was told by the production manager, "the man who never made a mistake never made f*** all,

To my understanding, that is the foundation of EVERY successful business in the WORLD!".  But to be strictly correct it is not "Made a mistake" more, "Found one method doesn't achieve the desired result". The old story about the brand name "WD40", for that well known water dispersal fluid comes to mind.  When formula's WD01 through to WD39 didn't work as expected, But WD40 did!   Were 01 to 39 mistakes or just part of the learning curve? "The man who never made a mistake (learned that one method doesn't work) learnt very little. (or some may say F*%& ALL).
