Okay I will bite.

USB = UNIVERSAL serial bus.  Note that word, UNIVERSAL

So WHY FFS is one socket labelled phone, and the other tablet?  The sockets are the SAME surely, note the word UNIVERSAL again.

Accepted Apple like to *******ise everything and be different, so should one be labelled APPLE?

TBF, 500mA is universal, which all devices will support. Some devices/power supplies will do >500mA, and Apple started it but now there a few that do it, and the reason they say tablet is because they are generally the devices that have larger batteries requiring a higher current for quicker charging to capacity.

think of usb sockets as 5v sockets rather than a serial connection when talking in terms of charging. most cheapo chargers like the ones Incorporated into sockets are rated for  a 2100ma charging current, one socket is always 500ma(like tv usb sockets) and the other 1500.

The same reason why you cant use a cheap phone charger to charge an ipad, it will take forever as apposed to a higher output charger.

Doesn't make a difference anyway, within the next 2 or 3 years everything is going to usb C type on both ends, so you'll need an adaptor to carry on using standard usb sockets. Even laptops will charge through usb3.1 type C, apparently there is 100w available on 3.1...
