Obviously don't come across much son or mh stuff doing domestic, so am hoping my learned friends here can learn me summat today.

Would I be correct in thinking that the control gear for SON and metal halide is different and non interchangeable?

In other words, SON gear can only be used with SON lamps and metal halide gear can only be used with metal halide lamps.

Also, if one were to have the gear in a seperate enclosure to the lamp, would there be a max distance apart?

I've come across a couple of sets of gear which is marked as 70W SON, so I'm just after knowing what the limitations on it's use are , so I'll know what I can potentially use it for in the future.

Thanks peops.

most control gear can take SON or MH. i have some ballasts here that are marked 70W SON/MH, 150W SON/MH etc. same with ignitors. just make sure you dont put a lamp with internal ignitor into a fitting with external ignitor, or lamp w/o ignitor into a fitting that has no ignitor

control gear can be separate from the lamp. not sure of distance, but its only a few mtr IIRC
