Hello

New to the forum and not an electrician-just someone who has a healthy respect of it's powers!

I'm wanting to install a motion sensor at either end of a series of outdoor lights (new install). What i can't figure is do both sensors need mains power and if so is that just linked between both sensors?

I assume it would need

L+N feed to PIR 1 + PIR 2

L1 from PIR 1 to lights red with linked lights red terminating in L1 of PIR 2

All neutrals linked

Hope this makes sense and someone can help

Indeed you are correct, use 3core to link pir's as you describe then twin to first fitting. Or supply each PIR with a feed and a twin to each end of the lights.

Many thanks for that. As I said, I respect the 'bite' that electrics can give and needed professional advice-duly gained :worship

Hi there.  I've just joined up tonight and would be very grateful for a confirmation. I'm 99% sure the answer is yes but would rather go the full 100 !

I have two Steinel infrared motion detectors (model IS 180-2) and would like to mount them on two ends of a building to be able to switch on four wall mounted lights (max 60w) irrespective of which way you approach the building.  i.e. if PIR 1 is triggered by approaching from the West the four lights come on, and if PIR 2 is triggered by approaching from the East the same four lights come on.

The post above reads that PIR's can be mounted in parallel.  A FAQ on Steinels site also says that "Several infrared motion detectors may be connected in parallel. Detailed information is provided in the technical specifications and the operating instructions for the motion detector concerned".  Unfortunately I can't find the detailed information either in the little booklet that came with the 180-2 or Steinel's site.

Are there any issues I need to be aware of ?  Some sites talk about using relay's or TRIAC's.

Do I simply wire both PIR's from the same supply (consumer unit in the building) and then connect the service lead from each PIR into each end of the light run (4 lights wired up in series)

Many thanks in advance for a confirmation.

Joe.

If wiring multiple switches or sensors to operate the same load  (light or group of lights)...

Then they MUST all be wired from and back to the same circuit..

DO NOT take supplies from different circuits to then switch the same load.

i.e.  if need to work on the lights, you must not be able to turn one fuse off thinking the supply is dead..

only to find another supply has made it live!!

Thank you very much for the fast response. Both PIR's will be wired from the same MCB in the consumer unit.

Its a beautiful day outside - ready for wiring.

Thanks again.
