Hi I'm new to forums so i apologise in advance if i mess up a little. I have a Brit Gas Mid Position Acuator modle BGMVSP-23 and a 2 Up Dual Channel Programmer also Brit gas in my system. I am able to get hot water but only if the heating program is turned off. If boiler is on while heating water and i then ask for CH the water will turn off and I wont get either. I am able to get CH now I have moved the lever on my Acutator to the mid position. Does this sound like an Acuator fault?

Hi Steve, welcome to the forum.

Just checking, was it working ok before?

I can't think of what wiring fault could cause your problem offhand, but it might be worth checking the tightness of the connections of the valve in the wiring centre. Turn off the power first, safest is the main switch at fuseboard.

The BG valve is the same as the drayton MA1, and the head can be easily removed by pressing the button on the opposite side to the wmh indicator, so could save a few quid if just replacing the head.

Welcome to the forum, How old is the valve? The valve has to direct water and in certain situations fire the boiler. It can physical direct hot water along either of the two pipes or by sitting in the mid point to feed both pipes. It also has a internal switch which fires the boiler when heating is called but water is off. With your fault is the boiler firing but water not going to the correct pipe. Or is the boiler failing to fire. It shouldn't be too difficult to see if the actuator is moving correctly by observing the lever in each of the heat and water on/off combinations. If you have access to a test meter the various input and output signals can be tested, which may help verify if the valve is operating correctly. The micro switch output is on the orange wire. Heating on should signal down the white wire and hot water off signals down the grey wire. The voltages are 230v mains so if in any doubt call a local electrician to come and test it for you.

Hi Thanks for reply. I am pretty sure the valve was replaced when i had a new boiler March 2014. I have set the acutator in the mid position so when the boiler fires i can get heating but only when calling for hot water and providing the heating program is set to off. If i set the heating control to any heating program then nothing fires up. I have tested the valve moves by removing it and I am able to move the valve using pliers so happy that moves freely.I don't have access to a test meter. All was ok before the summer and i was able to get hot water all through the year,it was only when it got colder and heat was required the issue was noticed.
