Could anyone give some advice please?

Main PC has been offline all day , Missus tried it this morning  ...can't get online .

The BT helpdesk can't help.

My laptop connects to the hub by Wi-Fi ...no problem  ( Hence this post)

The screen says   "Error  the remote server is not responding "

unless your using telepathy or something else, i would suggest you do have internet access...

have you tried the age old trick to fix most computer problem of switching it off then back on?

Open up a command prompt

and type "Ping 192.168.1.1"

What do you get?

(that might not be the correct address for a BT home hub, it's the address most routers use, but I don't know if the HH is different)

Reset the router? Hole in the back - press with paper clip etc for X seconds. What make of router - BT Homehub 3? MAKE sure you have your SSID, keys etc before you do though?

Homehub 3 is http://192....... press enter.............should see the BT Home Hub manager screen come up.

Deke,

Open command prompt, type ipconfig first, note the address of the pc & the address of the default gateway, that should be the IP address of your BT device.

If you type this address into your browser, this should open the page for the device.

You can also ping the BT device to see if the pc can communicate with it both ways.

Just went into Google Chrome on main PC ,  it looked at the problem and said  "A cable is not plugged into network adaptor """" Local Area Connection """"

The cable between PC and hub is in place .

OK found the SSIDs   .

The cable itself might be bu**ered. NOT unknown BUT the fact that you seem to be connecting to the router just not the net suggests the cable is OK.

Try typing that IP .............254 in first to see if you can connect to the router

The reset button btw is next to where the power lead plugs in on the back of the router. Those SSID detaials may also be on a sticker on the base.

EDIT: Just re read the OP! Could well be the cable between desktop and whatever it plugs into, wall socket, router etc. So try typing that IP .............254 in first to see if you can connect to the router

Deke,

Open a command prompt & type at the prompt ipconfig and come back with what the response is.

Have you got a "network" icon as I mentioned?
