Hi,

In my (rented) cottage I have an economy 7 tariff and two night storage heaters. The night storage heaters have been out of use (one broken/one unused) since before Christmas. When submitting a meter reading today I discovered the night rate meter reading has not changed since January - quite odd. I cannot actually submit the reading online because the figure is the same as the one submitted in January!

I was under the impression that the normal power/lighting circuit switched to economy 7 supply at night. Therefore,  I regularly put appliances (washing machines etc.) on timers to run during night rate hours to save money. However the fact that the night rate meter reading has not changed in the last 4 months would suggest that this is not the case, and only the night storage heaters are connected to economy 7 supply.

If this is the case it would mean I have been paying an above normal day rate for the privilege of a cheaper night rate but not actually benefiting from the night rate. :(  And even worse, my hot water tank, convector heaters, washing machine which are all on timers to run during the night have all been running on an inflated day rate.

I have read somewhere that there should be a spur from the E7 fuse board that directs supply to the normal consumer unit for sockets/lighting etc. Would it be possible that mine is not connected this way? The E7 uses an old fashioned fusebox with two blue 15A fuses, the normal circuit is connected to a modern consumer unit with trip switches.

As a tenant I am in a bit of sticky situation. It is unlikely the landlord would pay to have this sorted - he is beyond useless. Don't know what to do? Switch to a regular tariff as I don't use the night storage heaters (we have a log burner)? Any help/confirmation of the problem would be great before I complain to the letting agent/landlord.

Many thanks,

Josh

I have seen supplies before where the E7 only supplies the E7 circuits and not the 24hr circuits...

We need a decent, wide angle photo of the meter & fuse boards TBH but I don't think that you'll be able to post one on the forum yet so put it on photobucket or something similar and post a link

depends entirely on the setup. sometimes its a different meter that switches on during the night ti supply heating / hot water an the lower rate, the usual meter works as normal (sounds like what you may have?)

others have 1 meter that has a day and night reading which switches automatically in addition to switching on the off peak supply

it sounds like you have the first, and that it is working correctly as it should, just you dont understand how it works. do you have 1 meter or 2? as above, photo of the meter(s) and consumer units would be useful

You have off peak heating and not economy 7 you will have two meters and 1 timeclock.

Do you have two physically seperate meters?  If so you have an old off peak tarrif, NOT E7. It used to be referred to as the white meter sometimes.

Under the old system it was only the off peak circuits that got the cheap rate, but you did get 8 hours of cheap rate per night rather than 7.

If you have just one meter with two dials (or one reading that cycles between the different rates) then that will be E7 or E10 and all circuits will get the cheap rate at nght.

If you do find you are on the old off peak tariff, you can ask to change to E7 and they will change the meters, but if you are not actually using the storage hearters it might bebetter just to switch to a single rate tariff.

Thanks everyone. I have one meter, its electric and its cycles through 3 readings; day, night and total. I thought I had E7 as this is the tariff I signed up to with my supplier when I moved in just over a year ago. I'm trying to upload some pics...

You have E7 the time clock is most probably faulty and not switching to low rate contact your supplier
