You wouldn't say Portable appliance testing testing, so why is it written everywhere as Pat testing ?
may come from MOT test, where the T is not test?
And it should have been 'in service inspection and testing of electrical equipment'
I see where your coming from but Doubt it, That stands for Ministry of Transport Test, Which makes sense.

I like the suggestion of 'patting'. If you were testing some very large portable appliences would that be heavy patting?
