Been working on a large rewire this past few weeks and the builders asked me to run some cables in a trench they have dug in the floor. Nice and deep and I ran all in placcy conduit for protection. Now the gas fitter is having a wobbly because he claims his gas pipe from the meter to the boiler has to run in this trench also and the placcy conduit needs to be at least 25 cm away from his pipe. Anyone any ideas on this?

I would have thought that any pipe buried into concrete would have to comply with the relevant regulations for gas, which from memory means that the pipe would have to be sleeved and at least one end of the trench would have to be open, for any gas leaks? maybe some gas engineer may enlighten us. I have seen the utility companies use the same trench to a property for gas and electric. The conduit will offer some segregation and protection, which may negate the requirement for separation distances.

I would guess he's got his units mixed up?

Separation of Gas installation pipework from other services suggests 25mm

p.s.

Unless the gas pipe is greater than 35mm...

then separate by 50mm.... (or 5cm)

as captain gas may like to say!

Not sure if there are any additional extra rules for when its buried tho? :|

My thoughts exactly. I reckon he got on site this pm in a hurry to get to the pub and realised that the sparks had beaten him to use of the trench and had a wobbly! The trench is about 200mm wide and my conduit sits nicely. I have suggested that he uses 25mm spacers if he is really bothered. Jobsworth springs to mind.

Just thinking again....

he says 1/4 of a meter away???

how the heck would he manage going under the average domestic floor.....

loadsa cables within 25cm IMHO! :C

Hi all, I had to install some new services recently, and as far as i can remember they had to be 250mm apart?? It is up to the company that owns the various services. It is best to contact them first as they have all kinds of weird and wonderful requirements that they themselves completely ignore when it suits them!!

Best i can come up with is;

Will Wales and West Utilities install a gas pipe within a multi utility trench?

Yes. However, all utilities must be laid at the correct depths and with the correct separation distances. Further details are available from the NJUG (National Joint Utilities Group) 'Utilities Guidelines on Positioning and Colour Coding of Apparatus'.

Sooo, tread carefully, or when whoever comes to install whichever service, they might just refuse to do it.....

john..
