I have had my puppy for 1 week. He was wormed last monday and has had diarrhea since we got him. Sometimes there is blood in the stool but not always. The stools vary from porridge to water consistency and there is almost always mucous present. This morning we woke up to about 7 poops and almost all of them had white grainy stuff in. Otherwise he is drinking normally. We were told by the vet who gave him the dewormer that we should feed him normally, but we have since spoken to the breeder and he said not to feed him for 24 hrs and then give him chicken and rice. I dont know who we should listen to as we just keep getting contrasting info. HELP!

I hope so, i'm at my wits end. We are taking him to the vets tomorrow anyway, but I really want to know how i can help him now :(

Rachael,

Apache gets these threads through to his mobile, IF he is in a position to help, and he feels he, can he will contact you as soon as he can by replying to the thread.

Sorry, I don't have anything to offer with regard to your poorly puppy!

I hope he gets better soon.

Hello and sorry for the later reply. I have been watching the thread unfold but my Blackberry couldn't seem to connect to the forum?

Diarrhoea is undoubtedly abnormal and the puppy needs to be examined. Take along a fresh faecal sample in a clean container. The vet can send it off and check for common bacterial and parasitic infections.

Current thinking is to keep feeding dogs with diarrhoea. Something bland such as chicken/white fish/pasta/rice/scrambled egg is ok as are commercially available 'intestinal' foods from your vet. The presence of food in the gut provides local nutrients to the gut lining cells and helps prevent bacteria spreading from the gut into the bloodstream. The feeding also keeps nutrients going into the system as when there is diarrhoea there is usually reduced uptake. Starve vomiting dogs for 24 hours (puppies no more than 12 hours).

You don't say what you feed the puppy on, whether he has been wormed before, what product was used for the treatment, or the age or breed of the puppy. I'm sure things will be ok, but my guess is the puppy could be carrying something like giardia or campylobacter and require treatment.

As a number of the causes of diarrhoea in puppies can be caught by man strict hand hygiene should be practised at all times [especially by little people in the house!]

Let me know how you get on
