I have posted this before but have just experienced it again while working at a factory with many old and new isolators and switchfuses.

It seems that not too many sparks are aware of this.

On OLDER metalclad isolators ( MEM especially) with the switch OFF the window shows the colour RED (as in STOP) With the switch ON the window shows the colour GREEN (as in go)

On NEW isolators OFF shows GREEN ( for safe) and ON shows RED (for danger)

Moving from one to the other ,isolating machines etc was causing a bit of confusion with the colours. A quick glance " Oh that one,s off )

It always seemed to me that the colour change came in under the radar.

I think the same happened with MCBs , some really old ones , often makes we don't see these days, (Chiltern ?), had the toggles down for on and would flick up for off, again can be confusing .

Wylex offer a similar confusion in the up\down on\off logic on the old plug in consumer units.

There is a similar issue in the printing industry, that is big printing presses such as your "Daily Mail" etc.

HSE is aware of this one.

Green means safe to enter press.

Red means danger.

OK makes sense, BUT start buttons are green which means the machine will be dangerous, and stop buttons are red which means the machine is safe.

Not sure of the exact situations now as it has been over 5 years since I was invloved!

However, it is along these lines.

If you take green as go and red as stop for both of those examples then there is no issue. Green is go, as in enter machine, and green button is go, as in make machine go.

Lurch,

There is a contravention with the "H&S signs & signals regulations" where the colours are clearly stipulated in statutory legislation, along with a few other pieces of statute law.

However, there is a "caveat" in the printing industry but I can't remember the details.

Too long ago and Mr. Carling has had his affect tonight.

I am not friendly with KME's Mr Artois!

I'm not disagreeing with you, more of a general musing as to how the confusion came about in the first place. Too much red tape.
