Hi,

Silly question but i wanted to know ...... when you put your windscreen wipers on the setting to wipe every 5 seconds. How does it count to five. I know its a relay but how do they differenciate between say 3 seconds and 5. Is it solid state electronics or can a relay do the counting. If you can understand what im getting at??

Thanks in advance for any replies.

Cheers

it uses a 555 timer with a resistors

I have a VW Golf and the intermittant wipe on mine can vary.

Switch it on first and leave it on and it is approx 5 seconds but if you switch it off and back on again the time is approx 2.5 seconds.

What age golf is that? With a certain relay (definitely works on mk2 and mk3 golfs, maybe mk1) the time is adjustable

On modern cars the timing is done electronically. The timing and switching is done at low current via the electronics which uses a relay to power the wiper motor (they pull up to 20 amps).

When mine worked it was done with far too much electronics, half of which is missing as someone removed the rear view mirror!

You're lucky if you can get the wipers on a MK1 working at all:^O

My mate who I bought the car off.

TBF he has said he'll buy me a new mirror and mount, I just need to reconnect it and stick the bracket on the window.
