Have been asked to finish a job that the contractor done a runner. It’s landscaping with a load of lights.

A circuit has been done in armour but one circuit has been wired in a 3 core clear plastic outer with a braiding.

Erse kablo sy-Jz 3x1.5 class Eca 35/18 RoHS 03370.is this allowed. Part buried and part showing.

Any help would be appreciated.

Rip it out as that SY is not suitable to be used like that and will degrade quite quickly, also SY is a non-standard cable and it's use is frowned upon.

Well... remind your customer of the normal applications that SY cable would be used in.....

( show them a link from a typical cable supplier...  e.g. https://www.electriccable.co.uk/RWDsycable3core.php#3core )

Explain this may be why the contractors done a runner?

I am guessing it was a Builder who called himself a "Landscape Gardener"..

But No electrician has ever been involved so far...….

Then do as Sidney suggested..

Give the customer your price to;   Rip it all out,  Design Install & Test with proper wiring that is suitable for their application.

what ever you do, DONT try and bodge up a make-do affair with this cowboys left overs.

Do it properly or walk away..

second that - it isn't your fault the previous guy was an *****. Make a good job of it and don't mess the customer around and you will probably find you have made a customer for life!  JUst be wary tht customer has got some money left, write a proper contract out and get it signed off, take a deposit (great way to check out customer). Any trouble with money walk away.

If this is a new customer who you have never dealt with before, you sometimes need to be on your guard in case it is the customer who has caused the previous contractor to walk away. Although it doesn't sound like it in this particular case due to the selection of cable by a numpty.

My advice is to submit a price, including replacing the unsuitable cable

If the customer accepts it - then great

If the customer doesn't accept it - then don't worry about it

It seems to last when lying in oil etc .

I've used it quite often although not sure of all it's qualities etc.      I just apply the current rating  as SWA .   Seems to work .

Its also quite useless on a spring loaded reeling drum in cold conditions. Remember years ago reeling one off in winter and you could hear it cracking. The previous contractor had changed it from good old H07RNF telling the customer it was "stronger".
