New PC (dell) running windows 7, virgin broadband modem (cisco), and linksys g wireless router (model wrt54g). Have managed to set-up e-mail and internet sites, but PC insists it is not connected to internet, which means it won't access internet to get updtaes for windows or any other programmes. I think th issue may be with firewall, but can't seem to disable windows firewall. Anyone know how to do this, or know of any other problem that might be causing the problem.

for starters are you actually connected to the router be it wireless or wired?

sounds like a silly question but sometimes its that simple, next thing to try is check that your within the IP range of the router and that if your PC is set to use a DHCP is it actually turned on on the router?

more likely to be one of them rather than windows firewall i'd say.

wired to router and notebook connects wirelessly to internet aswell. I'm on the new PC now, which is why I don't understand how windows fails to recognise connetion

So what exactly is saying it's not connected and what isn't working?

Bengie is on the right track, need to check to see if either wireless or wired connection has been allocated an IP address by your router

So click on the start button

use the search feature and type cmd, CMD.exe should appear, just hit the enter key, and the black DOS style command window should open, now type in ipconfig and hit return

you should get a list showing your wireless and wired allocated IP address, it should be something like 192.168.1.2 or 192.168.0.2 take a note of what you see and let us know, we can then point you in the right direction

Ok guys, haven't been into DOS for years. sorry for not getting back earlier - domestic crisis!!

connection-specific DNS suffix : cable.virginmedia.net

link-local IPv6 address : fe80::4917:9a0b:406c:a541%11

IPv4 address : 192.168.1.100

subnet mask : 255.255.255.0

default gate : 192.168.1.1

if its anything like vista, you will have to tell it what kind or network it is, such as home, work, public or private, dont know win7 much so shall ask a colleague.

tried that, but doesn't 'see' wireless router despite the software having been loaded through this PC

that makes no difference to it working, thats just security settings.

just thought, is your copy of windows authenticated? windows update won't work otherwise.

Hmmm, seems window installer had become corrupted, I think by a programme called revouninstaller I was using to try and get rid on McAfee. Still haven't got wireless gadget connected properly, but everything else is back to normal - I was always good at cooking up PCs, a litle knowledge and all that... :^O

OK if you have both wireless and wired connected you should have two of these, but 1 is defo being allocated 192.168.1.100 and the router is 192.168.1.1

Try plugging in a Ethernet cable into the router and run ipconfig again

Also type in the start search bar 'view network connections' click on link and you will see if you have a wireless and wired connections

Right update on router. Found out that powering up router, modem and PC in correct order would allow all items to connect to internet. However linksys programme didn't want to work properly with windows 7.

Solution - hassle Virgin into matching sky package deal price and requested wireless router, which being all shiny and new works perfectly :Applaud
