You know whats comming next dont you :D

Is three core better than two core ? If so why ? :D

Those prices are half the price of what i was getting quoted !

you 'may' need 3 core to keep your Zs (earth resistance path) within specified limits,

with 3 core you use one of the cores as an earth as well as the armour sheath,

with 2 core cable you only have the sheath as an earth conductor.

Which is why I said about the calculation required. If you get the three core (n.b. those prices are plus VAT), you won`t have to worry about the earth path being low enough (or your spark won`t).

London, eh?

I`ll come and do it for you if you want???

I am fitting 20m of three core 25mm on a job on Monday, I could get away with two core but I always like to think that at least with one of the cores working as an earth I have a belt and braces install. Plus the fact that I can get the Zs to a minimum.

I just finished off a 25mm 3c sub main today.

I left plenty of cable to come through the wall and up the otherside to a nice height for the DB, the builder though decided that it was going on a wall the other side of the room and then laid a concrete slab over it only leaving about 18" sticking out of the floor:( :(

The finished article; TBH I'm not very happy with the height of it, but what can I do

I feel for you Noz, the same thing has happened to me, in fact the last job I did I walked around the job with the plasterer and told him where I wanted everything, came back for second fix to find half my cables hidden!!

I sized it for a socket circuit, lighting and a 9.5kW shower,,,,, guess what they changed their mind on the shower so it's now just supplying sockets and lights

Could have probably got away with 6mm for that;)

you could put a shroud on the gland.! ;)

I have a B32 in the house as the workshop feed then a power breaker . Then the armoured cable to a workshop fuse board with a B32 for the sockets and another breaker for the lights .

Hi JFC,

Ok, now how do you connect the machines to the supply? Are they "hard wired" as it were, to an isolator for each machine, or do you just plug them in to the sockets??

In the event that you just plug them in, what sort of plug is fitted to the machines??

I take it not just an ordinary 13 amp house hold plug, as unless you have a nail in them, i would expect that the fuse in the plugs would blow rather a lot when you switch the 3hp machines on!!!

john...

Noz tell the builder the consumer unit will now need boxing in as he has made it accessible to little fingers that will annoy him.

Not hard wired but i have fitted 16A plugs to them . When i bought them they did have nails in the 13A plugs :red card

I spoke to my mate yesterday about the new feed and he said i could go with a 10mm two core and an earth rod but 16mm three core would be the dogs danglies .

A quick update for you all, remember when I said I was doing a 25mm sub main install and using 3 core 25mm? Well my R1+R2 readings using both armour and one of the three cores as earth was 0.04 and the run was approx 12m. Measured Zs was almost identical to Ze.
