Working away in the foreign land they call London.

Incoming dno cable into a basement flat is cloth covered as shown in photo below.

Should this be upgraded ? Not the neatest dno install i know.

Thoughts please good people.

Yes i know there is something missing from the cut out. That's because I'm fitting a new Cu and I asked the seal fairy last night to remove the seals, and magically this morning they were gone

Old PILC cable wrapped with impregnated hessian. Under that is either steel tape or wire armour.

So worth reporting to have replaced or not? It seems ok. Very sticky but not weeping or anything.

The head at some point has been changed so someone thought it was okay. Not ideal it is hanging it's weight on the head but have seen plenty of these like washing lines across basements, London is full of them.

I too have done missionary work in 'that London'. We had a cable in a cellar on Chancery Lane, looked like SWA but no,sheath. Contacted LEB they said it was almost certainly dead

, so we left it

the cable is oil filled, and only really becomes an issue if it is leaking the oil, which then allows it to dry out, which then allows it to fail. So in short, I would not be bothered about it if it's not dripping from the end.

Who took the fuse out - if it was you - better not report it.

The building owner/custodian should "enquire" to DNO, but unlikely the original "DNO/Electricity Board" left the cable like this - so blame and cost may be charged to owner which may happen anyway. Ideally the DNO should be notified so they can make a judgement and to protect owner from loss of supply or liability issue in future.

Thanks Captain. I will pass that info on. It's a basement flat privately owned so no building management.

I think this may have been the original building supply before it was converted as it currently has a 40a dual meter that no electricity company can find a record of existing lol.

Probably means it should have been disconnected and has been marked as such but never has been.
