Don't let the HSE see this.

Hi chaps, Anybody ever see one of these? Back in the days before transistors, the Yanks would take valves from their tellies and radios down to their local shop for testing. Plug them into the slot and power up the machine. Yes, live testing with no enclosures, barriers or anything. Brilliant.

    Estimating/Quoting

What about a scanner? Scan your papers and save as a pdf or a picture. That way you have all your notes on the computer.

    your comments pls

NICEIC have decided that anything under 6,667 ohms is extraneous.

Adding a socket with no rcd protection

You could always muddy the water a bit and label the new socket as fridge/freezer.... or lawnmower! :red card

National campaign for licencing of electrical contractors

Howdy, Can't see it working. How many jobs have you lost out on because the customer found someone "better" - i.e. barely qualified, thinks the 17th Edition is for wimps... but he's cheap. Even though there's Part P down south, it's as naive to think that every notifiable job is being...

Earthed through gland plate screws only

Banjo on the inside, always. When I see one on the outside of an enclosure I have the same feelings as the OP. Let's face it, if neither way is wrong, they must both be right. And if I could be bothered I'd come up with a duelling banjoes gag!

    Zs Increased after changing CU

Don't forget the warnings in the CU packaging - check all connections are secured. I always tighten the factory connections and usually find a couple are loose. Don't know if it would make much difference but I've had a couple of glasses of wine and my neice is phoning me up every two minutes...

    interview questions???

don't pick your nose and don't text your mates during the interview 7th April 2010 18:12 Brilliant. Maybe leave the hoody at home too. ;) But seriously, employers don't want somebody who won't be on the team. Which means that, as an apprentice, you'll have to do every crappy job under the...

    any musicians on here?

I'm another tub thumper - I even once owned Carl Palmer's old kit. That unfortunately had to go when the neighbours started complaining... organised petitions... measured me up for a pine overcoat! Which begs the question: are drummers musicians? Hahahahahahaha

Insulation testing earth fault... strange one

It's neither PME, TN-C-S or TT no? It's a newbuild. So is it flats? If so, the DNO may have just earthed the conduit going upstairs and hoped that that the gas and the water weren't run in plastic. Which may well be the case. Seems either TNS or a Friday job to me. But I'm most probably...

    Cutting boards

Don't do what I did. I bought a Skilsaw for $80 in them thar United States. It was a great bit of kit. Until I needed a new blade. Buying a new Makita was cheaper. But whatever you pick, as Lurch says, floorboards, recip saw, oh no. You won't get a very straight line, since you'd be cutting...

Socket and switch heights in Scotland

Dave, I used to have a link to a Scottish Government/Executive/Reichstag site website that had a pretty comprehensive brief on the building regs. Unfortunately that was on my last computer, which died of boredom I think. After, literally, minutes of trying, I've not been able to find it...

Socket and switch heights in Scotland

Dave, It's the same regs - sockets 400mm off floor and light switches tit height. O) The SBS are only standards, more code of practice than anything. Anyway, the socket heights and what have you are conditions of planning permission. You're stuck with what's specified on the drawings...

    RCD for old installation

One big CU sounds good, but if the pyro tests out you'd be as well to use it. What's the second board for anyway? Might just be for heaters.

    Underfloor heating .

I've thought about getting it myself. I met a sales rep, and sales reps don't lie, who told me that using underfloor heating as a primary heat source was more efficient than heaters etc. because it only heated up to 25 degrees. He then went on about temperature envelopes and stuff. It was at...

Regs relating to the position of services?

I'd be a bit concerned about the boiler ****ing water as well. Something else to remember is that boilers get rather warm. And as they're usually in small cupboards, the small cupboards get rather warm too, which may affect the cable performance.

    Indesit oven problem

Sounds like a thermal cutout is... cutting in. Since you can smell electrical burning I'd suggest a dodgy connection to, or, tco on its last legs. Sorry for all the technical terms! :^O

    Definitely much maligned. :^O

    Lil tickle today, ouch.

They're much maligned but I think neon testers are great for situations like that. I remember working on a lighting circuit in a factory, just a quick job, so I only switched the room lights off. Put a bit of tape over the switch, mind, assuming that nobody would switch it on. Most people...

    Shower job

Definitely. Chance's are it's a new or newish shower. And equally likely, even though the fuse is stated at 30A, somebody's probably bumped up the fusewire! So 6mm cable as well. Regards
