I'm installing a new metal consumer unit. Regarding the cable entry points, can I use standard nylon cable glands. I cannot find any info in the wiring regs as to what I can or can't use.  Any help gratefully received.

Regards Chris

Wiska make one called sprint. Ref no TKE/P 40. Needs a 40 mm hole snd a nice bit of kit

Here's one i fitted yesterday into a Wylex board

The plastic  plug is to blank the earth hole if not needed

Woops, thats just for the tails but it means Wiska glands will be ok. Another badly written part of the amendment.

No regulation to cover cable entry's into a CU above and beyond what was already there in previous editions/ammendments.

it is only a distribution board. What could go wrong?

Where are those LFB CU fire figures again?

Those new Wiska membrane grommets are nice and they grip, the cable as well

Even herr Obersturmbanfuerher Cable said he liked them on the Webinar
I think they are brilliant. Should have been available sooner. Anyone who continues to use a bush and lockring needs their head examined.

Wiska also make an oval hole rubber to to fit the 20-25 mm glands for twin and earths. Only 1 cable per gland though so the board will look like Swiss cheese if you used them
Thats a very good point, there isnt going to be a lot of metal plate left after cutting all them holes, specially if ring circuits are used.

But do,we ACTUALLY NEED a fire rated seal?

AFAIUI the unit has to be non combustable NOT fire rated.....just saying

I do however agree with you and think it a good idea
Not according to BS7671 you don't no. Cable entry points into the CU do not have to be fire rated or non-combustible etc...

Ok, no need for ANY fire rated cable entries.

The ONLY requirement is IP rating, as per previous regs.

There is NOTHING, in BS7671, nor ANY guidane issued by ANY "scam", the IET, or ANY manufacturer that requires intumescent sealing.

Why?

The reason being, the issue is caused by incompetent installers, installing flammable plasteic consumer units.

The "scams" refuse to sort out their incompetent members because that would mean them admitting their incompetence.

The manufacturers will not admit their incompetence so they have gone with removing the fuel.

To be fair to the manufacturers. If they build an item that meets the specific British Standard then how can they be to blame? Surely it is the standard that needs addressing?

But they didn't & thats part of the problem.

Also wont compression glands melt and fall out? or are we using the rawlplug senario too?

Possibly, however, more likely is HOW the test to the standard is undertaken...

Afterall the manufacturer is self declaring...
