The petty things mentioned in his report make me giggle! No Grommet's oh no the place will burn down!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! also not a code 4 as the cables may be held in place by mortar or plaster ect and without looking how do we know they are not?.

Cheers SSAB
I beg to differ here.

In latest EIC Mag, report into fire at care home.

News story here

Report basically said:

The inquiry determined that the fire was caused by an earth fault as the result of abrasion at the point where a cable supplying 2 commercial washing machines passed through a knockout at the back of a metalclad DB inside a cupboard in a corridor.

Other findings

No grommet

Abrasion caused by vibration of washing machines

The DB being not inspected and tested at the construction stage in 1992 and when the installation was modified in 1998 for the washing machines; and not later than the fifth and tenth anniversaries of the completion of the installation

Material storage in the cupboards

The cupboard doors not being fire resistant

Not having an effective electrical maintenance system

No Grommet's oh no the place will burn down!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Tell that to the families of the 14 dead pensioners.

Loonytoon that is a little different to not having grommets in back boxes really its just poor workmanship and very unlikely to cause a fire unless cable is not earthed.

If the customer feels they would like some form of redress they might consider whether the following applies (I think it would in my 'scam'):

They should have had a written contract from the contractor as a condition of 'scam' membership.

They should have had a 7 day 'cooling off' notice, or waived it in writing.

The contractor should have a formal complaints procedure, which is inspected at their annual visit.

The customer could write to complain to the contractor if they did not get a written contract and or cooling off period, which they should record and investigate

Refuse to pay as 'cooling off' notice is a legal requirement.

Write to NIC to inform them that their member is carrying on their business without written contracts or 'cooling off' periods or waivers.

This would allow NIC to address these issues and ensure, the contractor operating under their scam, is providing the sort of professional service they want for the public.

So are many of mine; yet it is, technically correct.

Its an extension / misuse of the "doorstep selling regulations" - even if the customer calls you, and asks you to attend to price for a job. You attend, and say "Yes, I can do that tomorrow." They accept; then decide that "under the 7 day cooling off period", they`ve changed their minds; AFTER you`ve done the work - and they`re not going to pay.

At that point, you`re stuffed. No redress at all - the law is on their side; unless you have it in writing that they are rescinding their "cooling off" period allowance. :(

beware.

The NICEIC have absolutley no interest in any contractrual issues, they are only interested in electrical safety and compliance.

The cooling off period applies to any contract which is agreed on a customers premises (there and then type jobs, or agreed now and do later),, I don't think it applies if you send an estimate and they then call you up to agree...

Comes under "door step selling regulations",,, google it!

I see nowt on that linked page, to give me the impression Elecsa want to do anything differently to any other scam provider, TBH......

Oh, and I just "get on with it" as well - as Badg says, you can generally tell the ones to watch for.........

I had my elecsa assessment on Wednesday and the assessor asked to look through my written quotations (all 1 of them) as he wanted to see proof that I was offering the warranty. I also had one blank contract which I have never used before but he seemed ok with this. That's the main reason I went with elecsa as it's run by ex contractors who know what it's like in the real world not some office suit making it up as they go along

Hope the pic is readable!?! I am only suggesting a way for the customer to tackle the contractor and scam provider IF they feel they have not been dealt with fairly. TBH I would enjoy writing a few letters to an organisation I felt where purporting to act in consumers interests but in reality only interested in revenue generation.

This contractor may be operating entirely as NICEIC expect, a letter of complaint would allow them to reassure the customer. If they found things were not quite as they would like they could give the contractor some guidance. :D
