Since the other threads keep getting hijacked I thought I would start this so that all the nostalgia is kept under control in one place. So, here goes...When did they get rid of those signs at the start of the Motorway that said 'No scooters, invalid carriages etc'?Gypo's nicked them

What were the use of AA or RAC phone boxes??? to call ya daddy when ya car/van broke down?

When did proper apprenticeships cease?not a clue i too young

What ever happened to real Black Enamel conduit? only ever worked with the stuff at college, but i enjoyed working with it

What do I do with all the points I got from Jimmy Saville on his sunday afternoon radio prog [in brackets]?
Who is jimmy saville?

Who is jimmy saville?
He started out as as radio one disk jockey did a bit of TV top of the pops and jim'll fix it and all that and was a great fund raiser for stoke mandeville spinal injuries unit.

Started on Radio Luxemburg actually Batts , bit of a strange character but he worked for free at Stoke Mandeville pushing patients around etc . Wife's cousin was in there for years and confirmed that he did indeed spend a lot of time there helping people out .

Saville was a bit of a Simon Cowell type in the music industry , if he played your record you were made .

Which prompts the next question ....what happened to Radio Luxenburg ?

I remember it as the only place us kids could hear the latest pop music ,which back then was not played anywhere else. No Radio 1 ...2 No commercial stations ...no local stations so the hear Elvis , Chuck Berry, Everly Bros etc it was Luxenburg .

It was a commercial station , recorded in London ,I believe, but transmitted from Luxenburg to avoid the government stranglehold on what we should listen to. You could not hear it during daytime due to atmopherics but about 9.00 pm till past midnight it came in loud and clear.

Then the pirates out at sea forced a major change in broadcasting .

Just how old exactly are you Deke? to the nearest century if you really cant remember..... ;)

I remember listening to radio Luxemburg. Grotty interference ridden mono carp AM sound, fading in and out, lousy reception.

When I was a kid, Radio 1 was only on grotty old AM. you had the choice of insult your ears with the lousy audio quality but the music you liked on Radio 1, or listen to Radio 2 on FM in decent quality, but playing your dad's music. I still remember when they finally moved all the Police radio off the top end of the FM band and finally freed up space for Radio 1 and more local stations.

Time was, when living darn sarf, I had a monster FM aerial up just so I could listen to the likes of Capital radio.

I preferred Radio Caroline. Do you know that's still going? well sort of in name only really. It's on Satellite, though no longer on the Sky or Freesat EPG so you have to manually tune it. It plays some decent music, and of course in decent quality stereo.

We are now spoilt with many many more channels available in decent sound quality than ever before.

don't get me started on black and white tv. "for those of you watching in black and white, the pink ball is next to the brown" said a famous line of snooker commentary.

IMHO MK have been rubbish for a long time. Back in the days when all sockets had nice sharp square corners, they were the best. But as things went all rounded and curvy, MK went seriously downhill. Still the most expensive though, if no longer the best.
