Evening chaps,

no doubt all been said before but best to confirm!

if a customer wants a light fitting changed and there are no bondings can the job still be carried out wit a note on the cert? also, the same for an rcd?

second q is, if the lighting circuit has no cpc and they want a class 1 fitting (class 1 is metal right?) can i take a cpc from a socket? or is this a nono?

thanks chaps

paul

If you are changing 'like for like' no requirement to upgrade (or even install) bonding or fit an RCD. Would be good practice to suggest it!

Interesting one is question 2. I think it would be acceptable to take it from a locally convenient circuit but may be very very wrong.

i would insist on bonding being done, and RCD's on sockets etc.

only time i wouldnt is if it was being replaced because its failed and needs replaced, not because customer wants it changed.

a CPC should never be taken to a different circuit - too much chance of it being disconnected & left with no earth

You are correct, in that you are very very wrong. ;)

Circuits can share a common earth if designed and installed that way but you cannot tap an earth from another circuit where the fitting for the circuit in question isn;t suitable. It's either class 2 fittings or rewire the lights.

i have posted a link on here on a different thread for metal class II fittings,

i will have a look

So, lack of CPC in a lighting circuit aside, a client phones you up to put up a nice new light fitting and you would not install it because the bonding is inadequate and no RCD's in the property???

Next time you get one of those and dont want to do it, give them my number.

Ill do it.
