It isn't coated it is clad. A copper rod is inserted through an aluminium tube and extruded. The purpose to prevent corrosion to the aluminium.

Get a strand, bend it a couple of times, if it snaps it's Ali

Is there a quick way to tell the difference ?

Very easy. Scrape it with a scalpel, razor blade etc. If Ali it will still be silver colour. If tinned copper you will see the copper after scraping off the tin.

I think it looks the old stranded 7/.029 7/.044 tinned copper

I know this post is a couple of months old, just flicking through, but that cable looks awfully like VIR, seems strange no insulation shown, it was just where it was stripped !!
What happened in the end, there was no feed back ? any ideas ?

It was tinned copper, but just to be safe I put the cable in a wago box ( other boxes are available ! ) and used lever connectors to change to copper into the board.

Tested fine. It's a rental so I did a 3 year retest as I explained the cables were old and a couple of the other IR reading were lower than normal, but all within regs.
