Going to have some block paving done and they have offered to bury my swa cable under the hardcore once everything is dug out to the appropriate levels.

Do you think i should put the cable in some black flexible ducting for added protection and leave this wound up for them to layout to appropriate position as I know I cannot be there when they are doing the work.

Anyone know approriate size duct to use for swa 6mm 3core, the run is about 15 - 20 meters

How would they put your SWA in a duct when it's terminated at both ends???

as that's an almost impossible task are they going to put it in a bed of sand and use marking tape??

personally I wouldn't trust anyone else to do this unless it was under my supervision

Swa can be buried direct without any additional protection, however by the use of ducting any maintenance and or rewire is simplified.

The main issues from an electricians point of veiw is identification/notice, and depth.Any buried cable should be easily found by the use of tape or solid cable markers that show any digging can and will uncover live cables.

Depth will not be a problem for you because as you say its under block paving, but again it should be buried deep enough so no damage can occur.

I guess its all down to do you trust them to bury and mark the location accurately.

ducting - good practice

burried - still perfectly fine

All depends on the situation, likelyhood of it needing to be replaced, if it makes installing easier, etc

Just to clarify I was thinking of pulling the non terminated armoured cable into the ducting and leave this curled up out of the way so when they bring in the digger they wont damage it.

However the main reason for putting it in the ducting was incase the sheath of the swa got damaged when the block paving company were laying the hardcore.

The guy who did the quote said they have done it lots of times before and I just need to leave a plan for the cable layout.

Thanks for you help guys, will get some 2" ducting then just to be on the safe side.

Good nite all:yawn

As said , it can be buried direct . If you think you want it rewirable , the 2" PVC duct from builder's merchants is probably the best option .
2"

2" WTF..........

If you are going to the bother of putting duct in....

at LEAST make it big enough for............

Michael Cain and the boys to re-do the "Italian Job" with them Minis down it!!!!

Split ducting, it's split along the length of the ducting so you can put in existing cables etc.

Under paving probably no need for ducting but if it being driven over by vehicles I would definitely put it through a duct. Always a good idea to bury it in a bed od soft sand though if you are not using duct.
