6 Tera Bytes1000 bytes = 1 Kilobyte

1000 Kilobytes = 1 Megabyte

1000 Megabytes = 1 Gigabyte

do you see where this is going yet???????

usual laptop HD- 5 yrs ago - 20 Gigabyte

usual laptop last year - 200-400 Gigabyte

1000 Gigabytes = 1 Terabyte.

HOWEVER:

1. Data always expands to fill the available space of a hard drive......

2. circa 1989. Bill Gates (founder, microsoft), quote:

"Nobody will ever need more than 16 Megabytes of memory on their computer."

Oh, how the mighty have (NOT) fallen!

FYI

A byte is the amount of information contained in any one character, be it a letter of the alphabet, number, blank space, mathematical symbol, etc, etc

OK?
way back in the very early eons of mainframe computer history some pratt suggested there would only be need for 5 (five) computers! worldwide..

need at least 5 per house me thinks !!

In my younger days we used to use an early Osborne (luggable) computer

used CPM operating system, which only had two 360k floppy drives!!!

had a screen that was about 4"x4"!!! :^O:^O

you wouldn't get a flippin photo on one of those floppy 360k drives now!!!

just before colour screens were the rage we progressed onto another luggable computer, a Kaypro 16, with

"16 shades of green"!! :O:^O:^O:^O:^O:^O:^O:^O

ah progress!

and you tell the kids of today and they don't believe ya!

i have 30g was changing to 60g i dont do games or down load movies

so 30g will suffice for now

So what about this lot, then...

Useful metric conversion chart for you engineering types:

1 million microphones = 1 megaphone

1 million bicycles = 2 megacycles

365.25 days = 1 Unicycle

500 millinaries = 1 seminary

2000 mockingbirds = two kilomockingbirds

10 cards = 1 decacards

1/2 lavatory = 1 demijohn

2.71828 grams of turd = 1 natural log

1 kilogram of falling figs = 1 Fig Newton

1000 grams of wet socks = 1 Liter Hossen

:p

First machine was the commodore PET (Personal Electronic Computer) - the size of a small house; at approx the same weight.

God, it makes me shudder to think that I was actually considered as "brainy" because I could program the bloody thing - more than I can do now - C++ leaves me cold

wow..

2 questions one thread difficult to answer....

Q1. Back up.

What everyone has said is totally correct. But you have one major problem -

IT IS POINTLESS DOING A SYSTEM BACK UP IF YOUR GETTING A NEW COMPUTER!

The drivers and registry will be totally different. The back would overwrite the correct ones and you'll be stuffed.

Do what the Don says and do a file transfer on the files that you need. This is a good time to clean out and organise. When you then get your new computer put all your data in "my Documents" then all you need to do is back up and restore this and you can recover easily onto a new computer.

Full backups are only for system crashes when you are rebuilding the same computer.

Unless you are familur with Nero and file extraction from a full backup then its totally easier to do as the Don says and perform a file transfer or a directory backup.

Q2. With regard to the windows on a new disk.

If you have the serial number from the sticker as described by Apache then its a simple reload. Remember when you've finished installing the priority job is to get on the internet and update windows through Microsoft update. Once all the patched and service packs are loaded then continue.

Point to Note - If your using Firefox as described in another post then look at "Foxmarks" this is a program that synchronises all your bookmarks across different computers ( say work, laptop home etc) this way all your bookmarks can be kept stored and re-loaded automatically on the new machine.

2 Point to note microsoft have a migration package that moves automatically all your outlook and other personal settings from one computer to another.

good luck

nero is crap i used to back up and lost all documents but not pics so i was not happy

hi sorry not up to speed with computer i was thinking of installing new hard drive in my lap top can you explain why you had to buy new windows key and how much it costthanks
If you replace the HDD in a laptop you are also removing the operating System with the old one as you only have room for one HDD. You should have the key with the software unless it is not a kosher copy.
