The Kirby is in general use and you will get the opportunity to experience that at any time in the future. What you experienced is limited to a few.

I for one am slightly jealous.

They have loads of other stuff...some useable, some not. Air was from an old Siebe Gorman hand pump. I will have to prove my 'worthiness' before I can try one of the older Siebe ones I imagine. The suit is a newish one made by Otter in Bradford, the orignal Twill/canvas ones being reserved for specials and TV work.... :coat

Imk not big into this,

but couldnt they make a suit that 'looks' like an original?

for the TV work and stuff.....

fair play, that musta been a good feeling for someone like yourself that is into his diving, :D

you say a hand pump, you mean like a set of bellows kind thing???

Believe it or not they still make 'original looking' ones in China FFS!

But the 'die hards' and the TV companies often insist on originals where possible...BBC and 'damned fine costume dramas' sort of thing.

Pump was a set of hand cranked 'bellows'...mahogany case, brass turny type bits, rubberised canvas baggy bagpipe type thing and lots of cast iron. Definite work of Art and thing of beauty for those in the know. I am NOT in the know, but I am learning slowly... :coat

kerching did you manage to breath ok with having a hand pump or did you also have a dedicated air line aswell?

and what was the red yellow and black tings all twiseted like a central networks cable overhead supply was that the air for different divers?

I am breathing 'surface supply' via the orange hose and the hand pump.

My mate on the ' kirby' is holding the umbilical for his 'set'....Gas [in his case this is Air], surface comms, other is probably hot water [not actually sure, just guessing]. He also has a 7L bailout on his back... :coat

his 'gas' is mixed on the surface in a control room next to the tank.. As he was on air it was pumped and filtered from a compressor on the deck of the adjacent 'tender'

We were almost next to the Royal Navy Underwater Bomb Disposal Team:worship:Salute:Applaud.

They came over and 'had a dip'

Megalodon ?
Anyone care to elaborate for the uninitiated please?

---------- Post Auto-Merged at 21:22 ---------- Previous post was made at 21:21 ----------

Now we are joking. aren't we???My mate is an Instructor on YBOD [both]

oroboris

Draeger

Tried the YBOD once...not for me. Another mate has gone to 120/130m on his...:worship:Salute

On the other hand, sadly, I have had a few friends who have not come back.

That is the Wife's domain... :coat
Again YBOD?

Please?

Megalodon, oroboris, YBOD all types of close circuit rebreather. Your body only metabolises about 6% of the Oxygen that you breathe. Air is 21%, so when you breath out 15% of useable oxygen is blown off into the water. Rebreather recycles exhausted gas and cleans it with a 'scrubber' usually calcium hydroxide. Extra oxygen is automatically dded to keep you alive. Diluent gas, Nitrogen for an Air dive and Helium for a gas dive is added also.....simples

Draeger....simpler form of rebreather that does not rely on electronics, but uses mechanical addition.

YBOD??? one of the rebreathers has a large Yellow cover. This is known as the YELLOW BOX OF DEATH or YBOD.. :coat

Ahh,

OK, thanks for that!

I have heard of rebreathers, and I understand the science, but not something I have done, scuba diving, or whatever the correct name is, sorry!

I have also heard of Draeger as a manufacturers name for scientific apparatus, guess it may be the same co.?

One of the carpenters at one of my regular customers is well into diving, chat to him about it whenever I am there as it interests me, have thought about trying it, but not sure!

He was on about rebreathers the last time I was there.

I take it from your comments that they are not that reliable?

Not good!

Thanks for the clarifications appreciate it.
