Interesting Prof, though I can't find a specific statement relating to the quarter either way, I had been told by a so called "reliable" source that there was a quarterly issue.

As far as the Ltd. Co. & Sole Trader in the post above, that is covered by the links in the post by Prof.

HMRC would class this as tax avoidance.

Also, there is the Scam issue, if you are under the QS system (lets leave the details for a minute) one can ONLY be QS for a single registered entity.

Thus under the QS system he could be QS for the sole trader, but not the Ltd. Co.

Not sure how NAPIT would deal with that situation, Prof or anyone?

Same person 2 companies, would need to be 2 registrations?

Thus 2 assessments etc.?

Could 1 person be OK doing this?...

I am currently QS for two separate companys and have two assessments and registrations every year

I had been told that this is not allowed! What about conflict of interest?
That was one of the things I had cleared up with them before doing the second application at first they said no then gave me a 'yes' in writing as I am self employed as well as employed

Been 3 years now

Im am just hitting this boat now, going to have to go VAT registered my work is a mix of both so not sure how it will affect me yet!

I think the domestic customer wont mind if you are doing a good job really?

But if you are charging

Just registered last night, Friday night at the accountants, quite a bit of extra book work to keep though, keep the missus busy

You claim back the VAT on your materials.

You charge VAT on your labour.

You work out how much you are going to mark up the materials by, you charge VAT on this.

I don't get the fact that company's only wanting you if your vat reg. They still pay the same, if they pay you 100 if your not vat reg or 120 if you are then they still pay you 100 speno what's the big deal?
As a customer it 'feels' better reducing my VAT liability to the taxman by buying things that reduce that amount!

With our farm clients I always discuss prices ex VAT anyway.

As an example, It cost me 9k last year for my business expenditure. Thats where you save with VAT

well it had to be done at the end of the day, cant be limited by the vat threshold, they will just have to pay it or get someone else, hopefully I will move into the direction of less domestic work and more from commercial/contractors and let some other new business start up take my tighter fisted client
